Ministerial. The Minister of Health (Mr A.' J. Stallworthy) left Auckland last night for Wellington (telegraphs our special correspondent), He will return to Auckland to-morrow. Mr F. G. A. Stuckey (senior inspector of schools in Otago) left for the north by the second express yesterday. Mr W. Downie Stewart and Miss Stewart returned to Dunedin by the second express last evening. Oiir special correspondent in Auckland telegraphs that the Leader of the Opposition (Mr J. G. Coates) left for Dargaville yesterday. .' A Press Association message from Greymouth states that Mr J. Hughes, - manager of the Blackball mine'and formerly of Dobson, has been appointed an additional inspector of mines. Mr J. A. Valentine (ex-senior inspector of schools in Taranaki), who attended the jubilee celebrations of the Waikouaiti School at Easter, left Dunedin by the second express yesterday for his home in New Plymouth. Mr Alexander Bell, district public trustee, Greymouth, has been appointed district intermediate credit supervisor for the Westland rural, intermediate credit district, in succession to Mr T. R. Saywell. Dr Ralph Noble, psychiatrist to the Sydney University, who is representing the Commonwealth Government at the first International Congress on Mental Hygiene, now sitting in Washington, has also undertaken to represent the New Zealand National Council at the congress. Mr J. M. ’Dickson- Captain Coll M'Donald, and Mr W. J. Bardsley left for Wellington for the purpose of interviewing the Prime Minister and the chief engineer of the Public Works Department (Mr F. W, Furkert) relative to harbour reclamation areas. Mr Theodore Jj. Bailey, 8.A., has been appointed tb a temporary position on the teachihg staff of the -Otago Boys’ High School for the remainder of the current year. Miss Ella-M. Stanwell has been appointed to a similar position on the i;6taff of the Otago Girls’ High School. s During the absence of Archbishop of New-Zealand, the Bishop of Wellington, as senior bishop, is the Acting Primate of New Zealand, Archdeacon Mac Murray is acting as .vicar-general of the diocese bf Auckland during Archbishop Averill’s absence, and Archdeacon Bell _ and Archdeacon Dart are acting in similar capacities in the dioceses of Waikato and Nelson , respectively. The former Bishop of Riverina (Bishop Anderson) will yisit Waikato in June to administer confirmation. It is the intention of Archbishop AveriH to return to New Zealand through Canada, arriving back in this country in November. A very pleasant function took place on Saturday evening at Kyle's Hall, .South Dunedin, when a large number of friends gathered to make a presentation to Mr Andrew Douglas, late ’ foreman •of the Borough of St., Kilda, who will leave shortly on an extended trip to the Old Country. The chair was occupied by Cr Alexander Smiley, who expressed the hope that the guest of the evening would have a pleasant holiday. The Mayor of St Kilda (Mr John Beattie), who was present, with the town clerk, referred to the guest’s many good qualities and, on behalf of ' those assembled, presented Mr Douglas with a well-filled pocket wallet, which he hoped would always remind him of his friends apd at the same time be of some use to him during his well-earned vacation. Mr Douglas, who • suitably responded, will leave Nunedin to-morrow. A combined meeting of the City Council and the representatives from the St. Kilda Borough Council , was held last night for the purpose' of filling the vacancy on the Domain Board, caused by the death of Mr J. H. Hancock. Cr Shacklock moved that Cr Lawrence, chairman of the Reserves 'Committee of the City Council, be appointed to the position. He said that it was appropriate that the chairman of their Reserves Committee should occupy a position on the board Mr J. Beattie, Mayor of St- Kilda, nomiMr C. Conn, a member of his council, to fill the vacancy. He said that "Jr Conn had always interested himself in the beach, and that he would be -the right man for the position. In answer to a question, the Mayor stated that the City Council contributed £1350 to the board and St. Kilda £l2O. On a ballot b? ln g taken Cr Lawrence was appointed by eight votes to seven. Mr J. R. Sutcliffe, 8.5c.,-first assistant at Wellesley Boys’ College, Wellington, I who hhs been appointed principal of Scots College, has been at the Wellesley College four years. His earlier experience was obtained as a member of the staffs of the Wanganui Technical College, Wanganui Boys’ College, and Wellington Technical College. During , the war Mr Sutcliffe served as a machine gun officer and later as a Roya) Air Force pilot, and he was on war service from 1916 to 1020. At present he is second in command of C Company, Ist Battalion, Wellington Kegunent. holding the, rank of captain. His early education was obtained at Palmerston North, where in 1914 he was head prefect of the Boys’ High School. I 1 roni there he wont on to Victoria University. specialising in science and mathetaking his final B.Sc. degree in 1922. As a sports master. Mr Sutcliffe has devoted a good deal of time to cricket and football, and be was an active pla'yer both in New Zealand and while abroad during the war.
