RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATION.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly mooting of the Dunedin City Ratepayers’ Association was held last night in the Otago, Motor Club’s rooms, the president (Mr W. F, Forrester) presiding over a small attendance. A letter was received from the New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society stating that a conference is to be held in Christchurch on May 7 for the purpose of considering the deer menace, and the association was asked to send a representative.—lt was’ decided to write to the society offering the association’s support and to appoint Mr G. C. Thomson (Otago branch of the New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society) as the association’s delegate to the conference, A letter was received from the Post and Telegraph Department stating that the department was prepared to display cards or other notices showing fire brigade telephone numbers in all public telephone cabinets, provided the Fire Board was prepared to. supply the notices. —The Dunedin Fire Board wrote stating that the matter would be brought up at its next meeting. —The letters were received.
The chairman reported on a deputation that had waited upon the town clerk (Mr 6. A. Lewin) regarding later car services to the suburbs. The deputation had pointed out that for about the past 40 years the last cars had left at the same time, and it was thought that it was time to extend it to ,11.30 p.m. The town clerk had replied to the effect that the council had to endeavour to keep down expenses as much as possible if the penny fares were to be retained. However, the matter would have the consideration of the committee. The matter of extending the sale of tram tickets and that of dangerous corners was also discussed.—lt was considered that these matters concerned the suburban associations more than the city body. The question of the abolition of the parking area opposite the Public Trust building in Moray place was raised, and the secretary reported that the Otago Motor-Club considered the area the best for the purpose in the city. The club wished the association to join with _it in presenting a petition to the City Council to have the area reinstated as a parking area.—lt was decided to support the Motor Club’s petition. Th e secretary said that where Leith street joined Anzac Highway there was a wood yard. The association had approached the City Council some time previously asking that Leith street should he continued to meet the Highway directly. —The chairman said he understood the council had an arrangement with the Harbour Board —the land was under Harbour Board lease—to go on with the work when the leases fell due. —It was decided to write to the City Council asking what was being done.
The matter of what was considered to be a dangerous intersection where Eglinton road meets the Main South road was referred to the Otago Motor Club. It was decided to write to the City Council urging the desirability of proceeding with the Sullivan’s dam extension work, and pointing out that this would help to relieve the unemployment situation.
