MSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL

The meeting of the Mosgiel Borough Council, held last evening, was presided over by the Mayor (Mr W. E. M’Lean), and Cre J. Wright, G. A. M'Leod, L. S. Dyer, James Mitchell, and John Garrett were present, Mr E. Fletcher Roberts conferred with the council regarding the concreting of Gordon road.—lt was resolved to ask Mr Roberts to report on the matter, the council to be called together as soon as the report was available. CORRESPONDENCE. Lady Fenwick wrote acknowledging council’s letter of sympathy.—Received. The St. Kilda Borough Council wrote acknowledging the council’s letter of sympathy in respect.to the death of the late Mayor (Mr R. W, Hall). —Received. The Main Highway Board, Wellington, wrote directing the council’s attention to the question of the highway during holiday traffic.—Received. The Grey Electric Power Board forwarded a copy of a prospectus of the hoard’s new loan in regard to the investment of any sinking fund moneys the borough might have.—Received. The Transport Department, Wellington, wrote stating that it was proposed to call a small representative conference of all local bodies as soon as possible for the Surpose ot reviewing the Motor Vehicles Regulation, 1925. and any suggestions received as a result of this communication would be submitted to the conference. — Received, The Minister of Transport, Wellington, forwarded a circular letter regarding local speed limit,—The letter to lie on the. table for a month. . The Mosgiel Brass Band made applications for grass to be cut in the Recreation Ground for their practice purposes.— To be attended to. The heavy traffic returns were laid on the table. Applications for licenses for public halls wove dealt with and referred to the fire inspector. Provided all was in order, the applications would be granted. Mrs J. Robertson presented the council with a framed enlargement of the late Mr R. J. Scddon.—Received with thanks. REPORTS. The -Finande Committee reported that the receipts for the month had been £370 13s Cd, and recommended for payment accounts totalling £I6D. The' bank pass book showed a debit balance of £1874 11s mJ was recommended that the conncils employees’ indemnity insurance be renewed with the State Office.—Adopted, n Th« -Works Committee reported that the following works had been carried out during the month:—Water service: All air and scour valves on the pipe line had received the usual monthly attention. The dead ends of the mains Lad been run off and the sewers flushed. The reservoir had been emptied and thoroughly cleaned out. Defective water services had been repaired in Factory road . and Inglis street. New water services had been put ln in Argyle street, and at Wingatui. The "'vo defective meters in Wingatui road had been dismantled and sent to Dunedin for testing. A water service in Green street had been lowered to suit the grade of the new road formation; 1,364,000 gallons had been pumped from the well durmg the month. Drainage: Septic tanks— The settling tanks had been emptied and desludged, filter beds and distributors cleaned and all channels swept, and edges cleared of grass. The two sump holes had been sunk, and a line of pipes laid to connect the same. A chokage in the sixinch storm water drain in Wycliffe street had been cleared. Four new house connections had been tested and passed. Maintenance: The horse grader had been Sf “ Quarry roads on the sth, 6th, 7th, 22nd, and 23rd. The footpaths and water tables in Gordon and factory roads had been grubbed and cleaned and sprayed with weed killer, ihe whole of the Recreation Ground had been rolled with the horse roller.
