TO THE EDITOR. Sib,— " Übique ” claims that the United Party has over and over again expressed ita gratitude for Labour's consistent supTT Or -i‘ j 1 te, l “ Übique ” that the United Party is quite prepared to go to the country for another election, and that Labour views will not stop Sir Joseph Ward from putting any of his pledges before the House. Then. Sir. your correspondent quotes the Auckland Star as chiding the United Party for splitting the anti-Reform vote jn the Hutt election and as advising the Government to leave the seat for Mr ■Nash, the Labour candidate. Xo, Sir never will the United. Party throw in the towel to Labour, as the Mutt electors have always voted Liberal. “Übique” describes the Auckland Star as tha moat influential United paper in Xew Zealand U so happens that I get the Auckland ptar regularly, and to niy way of thinking it lias changed its political views since amalgamation with tho Christchurch Times. Had the United Partv taken the advice of the Auckland Star‘it would have been down nml out for breaking its platform pledges. The Auckland people took it to heart when Sir Joseph started the South Island Main Trunk railway, the Nolson-Westport ralluav. and the mail service from Melbourne to Bluff Moreover, if I remember aright. Sir Joseph refused money to Auckland to carry on with the harbour bridge. I ask “Übinue” to tel! me bow he knows the Melson-Westport line is ridiculous. Hoes he know the country the line goes through? And whore did cct his information that the United Party and Labour were negotiating with a view to a formal coalition nr even’ amalgamation,— f am, etc,. Queer Fellow. . December 3.
