GORE A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL SUMMER SHOW. SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE’S DAY. RESULTS OF HORSE JUDGING. (From Or* Special Reporter.) GORE, December 4. The weather could not have been better for the second day of the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Show than It was to-day. Early this morning it looked as if the sun was likely to prove a little trying, but towards noon a slight breeze arose which tempered the heat, and brought with it a few clouds to break the full force of the sun. The afternoon passed in the most comfortable and pleasing circumstances. There was a large crowd of people at the show grounds from comparatively early in the morning, and by the time the competitions and ring events were commenced late in the afternoon the cordon of spectators around the ring and in front of the stand was well nigh impenetrable. The only sections left to be judged this morning were those for Clydesdales and working draughts, light horses and ponies, and a few classes cf pigs and dogs. The horses, however, were forward in such large numbers that the fudges did not complete their work until well on in the afternoon. One of the-features of the afternoon was the grand parade of prize stock, which was notable for the magnificent assembly of horseflesh—one of the best that has been seen in any of the show rings of the South Island this year. The Clydeechiics made a brave showing, and their appearance in the ring emphasised their excellent condition and bringing out. The ponies seemed numberless, and there was a splendid representation of hacks and hunters.

The dairy breeds made the cattle show. The black and white of the Fricsiaus, the red and white of the Ayrshires, and the peculiarly individual colouring of the Jerseys were all marked contrast with the dominating bay which characterised the horses.

The side show .community was the largest that has ever graced the Gora show grounds. One or two years ago the committee hero decided to allow no shows on’the ground whatever, but the ban has now been removed, and the showmen have returned in greater numbers than eyer with a remarkable variety of attractions. The real showman seems to be a thing of the past. AVith the exception of some Chinese, the side shows are of the roll down variety. The pony entry of 94 animals provided the juvenile riders of the district with an excellent field day. The judge found the task of picking out three prize winners t ?° muß h * or him, and he finally decided to place as many as five in one or tw 0 _ classes. That the breeding of ponies in the Southland district is progressing is indicated by the great' improvement that is to be noted in the rings that come forward at most shows south of the AVaipahi River. A upon which the boy and girl riders were to be congratulated was the excellent manner in which they handled their mounts, exhibiting a nice sense of the best way to demonstrate the movement and action of the animals. Some of the ponies shown, however, have not had much training m the matter of manners before the judge, and as a result one or two very fine specimens lost points. . -Mr Thomas Gee, of Christchurch, who intends showing a couple of .ponies at the Royal Show next week, had two entnes forward, with which he gained some recognition, including the pony champion, snip. Ihe champion was his Desert 13 Immls, which has had a tiiumphal. march from Christchurch to Gore during-the past few weeks. The prize list include the names of most of the best-known pony fanciers in Southland, and. in addition, there are many now names in the catalogue, allowing that the logue of the pony is on the increase.

There were only four entries in the ’fi a 'nn"rI Kb * hunters class, but, they were ?L lty t y p “ 1 - the pick of the bunch being the animal exhibited by Mr Adam Jack, a nicely-boned and clean-limbed stamp of horse, with quarters that suggested great jumping power. ~ Nliss D- Mowat s Coline was adjudged the best of the three-year-old hacks. She is a nice type, with excellent manners, ful a carria 2e at once proud and graceThe entry of fillies and colts was a good one, all the animals being in the pink of condition and excellently brought out. Mr T. H. Ivey, of Timaru. who has appeared at most of the South Island Showa fcms year with his stylish dog carter, with which he had captured many prizes, was again among the winning exhibitors to-day, securing the red ticket for best single harness horse, and also the first prize card for the best turnout. There was good competition in the lady’s hack classes. Miss D. Mowat’s Coline taking the third prize. The red ticket went to the Washdyke exhibitor, Mr J. M. Shaw, with Mr J, C. MacDonald second. CLYDESDALES, The Clydesdale horse, section comprised 33 classes, and as all these were fairly well contested, it can be imagined what an excellent array of heavy horse flesh confronted the judge during the day. Mr Thomas Logan, of Otama, has generally dominated the section-at the Gore Show, but to-day he had to take a minor place in the prize-list. Two outside breeders were represented by large teams which caught the judge’s eye. and appealed to Ins fancy with great frequency. They were Messrs Fleming Bros. (Crookstoii) and Mr Alexander Thomson (Kelso) They were consistently in the picture right throughout the section, and at the close of the day’s judging it was found that the possession of the cup for most points in the draught section was at issue between them only. The trophy went to Messrs Fleming Bros., whose string of all ages and both sexes did remarkably well. Few of them failed to annex some class award. Mr Thomson’s performance on the day was only less outstanding. There was nothing on the ground to deprive Mr Thomas Logan's 17-hand black of the championship ribbons for entires. Archaic still retains the character and distinction that have won him general recognition throughout the South Island during the past year or two. He was awarded the championship to-day, with Mr Alexander Thomson’s Great Count — a splendid two-year-old, well grown, with capital legs and impressive action—in the position of runner-up. The gelding championship went to Messrs Fleming Bros., of. Crookston. the reserve award being secured by the Kelso breeder, Mr Alexander Thomson. Messrs Fleming Bros, received both the female championships, the supreme award going to, their Eden Lady, and the reserve ribbon to Boquhan, both of which were looking remarkably fresh and wearing extremely well. The females as a whole were a very fine class, rather better in some respects than the males. The working draughts were a mixed lot, but the entry included some very handy types of useful workers which, at the same time, showed plenty of breeding. Messrs Fleming Bros, and Mr Alexander Thomson, although they were the most successful exhibitors, by no means had things their own way. Messrs James Roberteon and Sons (AA'aikoikoi), Mr T. Logan (Otama). Mr James A. Johnston (Maitlandi, Mr D. Jenkins (Kelso), and Mr R. Dodds (Charlton) also showed some good specimens of the heavy breed, which met with the approval of the judges
