MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

Mr W. E. M'Lcan (Mayor) presided over- the monthly meeting of the Mosgiel Borough, Council last night. There were also present Crs J. Garrett, L. S. Dyer, J. White, G. M'Lcod, John Wright, and J. Mitchell.

CORRESPONDENCE.

The District Highway Council wrote with, regard to the tar-sealing of Gordon road, and replying to the council’s letter of .October, 26.—Letter received. With regard to the council's interview with the Public Works engineer, in rcepect to the tar-sealing of Gordon road, it was decided to appoint a consulting engineer and ■ authorise him to carry out • the work. -

The Public Works Department wrote with regard to flood damage in Mosgiel borough, and replying to the council’s application, advising that as no railway road or other public building was, endangered by the flood the, department regretted that it could not recommend Government assistance towards the cost of the proposed work.—Received. The Minister of Railways (Mr W. B. Taverner) wrote in reply to the council's request that some improvement be made to the waterway of the Owhiro Creek, in order to prevent flooding in the borough, stating that this creek discharged into another creek further west, which, through not being cleaned out regularly, caused the waters of the Owhiro Creek to become dammed- From investigations it was indicated that.’the waterway of the Owhiro Creek was generally greater than was originally provided, but with, a view to assisting in the matter the department was prepared to contribute half the cost of enlarging the waterway, namely, £IOO, if the borough council would pay the balance and undertake to keep the creek in a state of cleanliness.— Referred to the Works Committee. The Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) forwarded a circular letter setting out the arrangements for the observation of Armistice Day.—Revived. The Mosgiel Brass Band wrote applying , for the . use of the Recreation Ground for quickstep practice during the next few months in-preparation for Hie band contest.—Granted subject to the band ceasing practice before 10.30 a.m. .The Taieri Poultry Society made application for the hire of the Coronation Hall for Saturday, July 5, 1930, for its annual show.—Referred to the General Committee.

J. C. Patterson applied to rent the Coronation Hall on Friday evenings for weekly dance for a period of three months from February 1 next.—Left with the General Committee*

- REPORTS. The Works Committee reported on the work for the month as follows; , drainage Septic Ta,nks.™-The receive mg and settling tanks had been emptied and thoroughly cleaned but, the distributors and filter beds had received attention and all channels had been kept clean. Sewer connections had been put in for five ratepayers. A blocked storm water brain in Gordon road had been cleared. Water Service. —All air and scour valves had been gone over twice during the month. Irishman's intake had been cleared of gravel and the dead ends run off and sewers flushed twice. The power creek pumping plant had now been -in operation: for three-weeks, and had-some-what restricted the supply from the Silverstream intake. There had been 4.243.000 gallons of water consumed during the , first 20 days of this month, 2.580.000 gallons from Where Flat and 1.663.000 gallons from the supplementary supply in Factory road.’ That represented a average daily consumption of 141.000 gallons. : Maintenance.—The following footpaths had been grubbed with thfe horse grubber: —Dey, Dryden, . Morrison, High, Tay, Argyle, Berwick, Montrose, Glasgow, and Irvine streets and Bush road. Weedkiller had been sprayed on the watertable and footpaths in Wycliffe street, Mure street, . Irvine street, and Park street. The formation of Green street was well forward, over 200 loads having been carted to fill in the depression. There was still about one week's work to finish the full formation. Parking area, signs for licensed vehicles had been erected in Gordon. road. The planting of annuals in the flower beds of the Gordon Road Park was now being carried out.

Gravel Contract.—Fifteen yards of gravel by motor lorry were carted and spread in Quarry road. Hanlin’s Contract.—One hundred and fifty loads contract C and .108 loads contract B had been spread in Gordon road. Four loads of fine gravel had been spread at the entrance to the Gordon Hoad Park. The Works: Committee.‘recommended that a line of 4-inch agricultural pipes be laid in-Mr Gow’s paddock to take .the drainage and. seepage from the reservoir.

Owhi.ro Creek.—A reply having been received from the Minister of Railways to the, council’s letter requesting the widening of ■ that creek to increase its carrying capacity, it was recommended that a further letter be forwarded to the Minister relative to this matter. Illegal Use of Water by Outside Consumer.—The committee had had the matter under further consideration and it was now recommended that letters be forwarded to complainants enlisting their assistance as regards evidence.—Report adopted. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the month had been £324 17s' 7d, and recommended payment of accounts totalling £328 5s lOd.—Report adopted.

The Taieri Footbalk Club applied for the use of the recreation ground for the 1930 football season.—Granted upon the same terms as last year..

The rector Holy Cross College applied for the recreation-ground for students to play football during 1930 season.— Granted upon the same terms as existed last year. Authority had been granted to the chairman to employ labour to turn over the heaps of soil in the recreation ground stored for top-dressing, and also to procure estimates for erecting swings in the recreation ground.'—Report adopted.
