STREET CROSSINGS

NEW SAFETY DEVICE. MANCHESTER EXPERIMENT. LONDON, October 22. “ Every man his own policeman ” is Manchester’s way of securing safety in crossing streets. A cross-roads device is being installed where no point policeman is stationed by which pedestrians, when they wish to cross the road, press s button, which registers “ Stop ” on an automatic street signal. The indicator remains like that for 15 seconds. “ Pedestrians simply cannot cross the roads in safety at present,” said the chief constable. He added that the new signal cannot be abused, as it will be impossible ,to , use it again until 45 seconds elapse.
