UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.
DEFECT IN GOVERNMENT SCHEME. A r MILL OWNER'S COMPLAINT. (Per United Paces Association,) PALMERSTON N., November 4. A statement that the latest relief scheme for the absorption of the unemployed had an unsettling effect on boys following definite vocations and was prejudicial to those learning trades was made by a' mill owner. Boys of 17 who had obviously not reached their full earning capacity were obtaining relief work at men’s rates of pay. He said eight left last week, and this was a double tax on the industry, while farmers were calling out for labour. It was stated that youths made a declaration of unemployment, and apparently no effective steps were taken to verify the facts or ascertain when they were discharged. Not only were the fundamental principles of the relief scheme being defeated, but the conditions had an unsettling effect on other youths engaged in permanent vocations. POSITION IN DUNEDIN. REGISTRATIONS AT CENTRAL LABOUR OFFICE. A register for unemployed men was opened yesterday morning at the Dunedin Central Labour "Office, and at a late hour m the afternoon the secretary (Mr R. Harrison) stated that the registrations for the day totalled 111.
