FIRES.
SIX-ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED. FIREMEN OVERCOME BY DENTAL GAS. (Feb United Press Association., ELTHAM, July 27. A fire at 4 o’clock this morning destroyed a six-roomed house on Mountain road. Eltham, owned by Miss C. Morris (New Plymouth), and occupied by Mr and Mrs W. ,H. Powell, who were awakened by the smoke, and found the building ablaze. Part of the furniture was removed yesterday in view of the Powells’ departure from Eltham. The balance, including a dentist’s outfit, was destroyed. Tim fire brigade did good work, but the building was gutted. Some of the firemen were gassed as the result of the explosion of a gas cylinder, but later recovered. The insurances on the- house are not available, but the furniture was insured lor £3OO and the dental equipment for £9OO, both in the South British Office. The personal belongings were insured for £2OO in the Alliance office. DAMAGE AT THE GARDENS. The Central Fire Brigade received a call at 7.34 on Saturday evening to the Botanic Gardens, where a fire' had broken out in the boiler room. Considerable damage .was done'. The insurances arc not yet available.
