AIRMEN FOUND.
SEEN BY SEARCHING AEROPLANE. MAROONED ON MUD FLAT. CREW SAFE AND WELL. FOOD DROPPED FROM PLANE. It was with feelings of relief that the news was received in Dunedin yesterday afternoon that the crew of - the Southern Cross had been found. Following the brief announcement shortly after 3 o’clock that the aeroplane Canberra had found the airmen and that they were safe the discovery was almost the sole topic of conversation, and speculation was rife regarding the possible experiences of the crew. Evidence of keen public Interest was given in the fact that there were numerous inquiries at the Daily Times Office throughout the night for further information. Later messages show that the aviators have merely been seen from the air and that the Canberra has not succeeded in communicating with them although it was able to ascertain that they were well and uninjured. It was seen that they had landed on a mud flat 40 miles from the Port George Mission Station and that they were not in need of water. Food supplies were dropped from the aeroplane. Owing to the isolation of the district in which the unfortunate flyers made an apparently forced landing details are meagre, and no explanation has been given of the methods which will be adopted in extricating the men from their present unenviable position.
