GREEN ISLAND NOTES.
The' damages caused by the recent flood in Green Island have .to some extent been repaired. The roads and streets which were scoured by the rushing water, are still very rough to walk on and could do with sonic attention. The few residents whose houses were inundated have'been busy putting things right, but it will be some- time before the gardens are back to normal. • ' ; More interest in the approaching, council, elections is being shown than is usually the case. Mr W. T. Smellie is said to be opposing. the present Mayor i(Mr Kaler),' and .there seems to ,be, 1 according to f ilm-, our, a.plethora of would-be councillors in the field, some with'and'some without experience. Drainage and> water supply \seem to be engaging some attention. The tar-sealed roadway through the’ borough is very much broken alongi the edges and requires some -attention. The alterations at Lookout Point are not giving 'the expected satisfaction to local motorists, drivers of lorries considering that the gradient in places is worse than before. The fortnightly meeting of Court Pride of Green Island, A.0.P., was held on Wedneseday night, and was well attended, the C.R., Bro. S. Barnes, presiding, after being installed by the D.C.R., Bro. Ensor. Routine business done, the delegates to the district meeting held at Roxburgh each gave a detailed report of the proceedings_ ythere. One new member was duly initiated.. The. juvenile' court'- held its meeting on the following night, and there was a good muster of members. The secretary gave a report of the district, meeting to the boys, who showed a keen interest in the affairs of the juvenile courts represented. One new member was initiated. , A motor mllision occurred on the Main road near tne bowling green this morning, resulting in the driver of the car receiving a cut on'his face by broken glass. The car was also'damaged to some extent. It seems that a-dray was travelling northwards, and the car driver, travelling.in the same, direction. ih attempting to pass and being blinded by the rising sun, did not see an approaching motor lorry coming in thie opposite _ direction until too late to avoid, a contact.
