THREE YOUTHS’ ESCAPADES. <r _ ' BORSTAL TREATMENT ORDERED. (Pkb United Phess Association.) WELLINGTON, February 15. ' ■ Three youths, named Arthur Edward Cowper, Trevelyu Birdling Otten, and Eric James, Ferguson, pleaded guilty unlawfully to converting cars to their own use. These were the young fellows who were reported some days ago as haying toured from the South Island'bv this method. Otten was also charged with the theft of an overcoat valued at £4. Ferguson admitted stealing two motor cycle tyre levers and a spanner, and Cowper the theft of a pair of socks, a tie, and a shirt. All the accused belong to Christchurch. They took a car to Christchurch and abandoned it there, taking another on to Invercargill and back to Timaru, where they abandoned this car in a ditch. They took a car at, Uaimato and abandoned it near Christchurch, where they pickel up a fourth and went to Hokitika, thence to Nelson, where this vehicle was abandoned in a quarry. Some of the cars were damaged. The thefts were committed on the journeys. Besides those mentioned in the charges, there was a trail of benzine thefts. Cowper and Ferguson were each sentenced to three years in the Borstal Institution, and Otten to two' year* in the Borstal.
