THE ROYAL SHOW.
The argument which a correspondent advances this morning against the selection of Invercargill as the location of the next Royal Show is one that cuts both ways. It is perfectly plain that the expense that is involved in the transport of stock for long distances is a serious matter for owners who are not, as our correspondent puts it, “ regardless of money,” and it is equally plain that the risk in connection with the transport in the case of valuable stock, such as may be expected to be exhibited at a Royal Show, is very considerable. We do not recall, however, that any objection on this score was raised when it was decided that a Royal Show should
be held at Auckland. If the objection to the choice of Invercargill as the venue of a Royal Show possesses validity, it was a mistake to hold one of these shows at Auckland. If the conditions are so unequal as to prevent a representative display at Invercargill, they were just as unequal at Auckland. A strict regard for frankness compels the view that, in a country with the configuration of New Zealand, it is difficult, if not impossible, to secure that at any Royal Show, wherever it is held, there shall be a completely representative display of the best stock in the country. This must have been recognised before a Royal Show was instituted at all. It was hot, however, considered an insuperable obstacle to the establishment of a Royal Show, and it is hardly to be imagined that there are a- great many breeders of the opinion which is entertained by our correspondent, that a Royal Show is (t not worth bothering with ” when it has to be held under the conditions that exist in New Zealand. Having once been instituted the Royal Show must surely be regarded as a permanent fixture in the Dominion, and it must be left to the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand so to exercise its judgment in the distribution of its favours as to encourage a worthily representative exhibition each year.
