DUNEDIN CUP MEETING.

It seems safe to predict a successful conclusion to the Dunedin Cup meeting, ■the fields are satisfactory, and although the interest in the Hazlett Gold Cup would have been greatly enhanced if Aussie had won the Publican’s Handicap it cannot be overlooked that he ran a great race under difficulties. Rapier will be very much better over a mile than six furlongs, and after being trained and raced over a distance could hardly be Expected to jump away from a flat foot start and go with others whose only mission in life has, so far, been confined to the cultivation of speed. The chief interest in to-day’s card will on the Hazlett Gold Cup,. but Limerick looks sure to start a good favourite. He rap sis furlongs in Imin 17sec without being fully extended on Cup Day, and presuming that he wore shoes it reads a good gallop. The work out should also help to smarten him up and, in fact, he came back to the birdcage showing that he would benefit by a S°°d rousing gallop. The rest of the card should supply some excellent sport. A comparison of the figures in the Dunedin Cup and .D.J.C. Handicap reads as follows:— 1

It will be seen at a glance that Count Cavour and Papa'tu are the worst treated horses m the race. The figures show that Pink Isote meets Royal Saxon on 51b worse terms, than when they met in the Dunedin Cup. Pink Note ran Royal baxon to threequartere of a length in ™. Invercargill Cup when giving him ■ -in. ! ! nc , in D.J.C. Handicap there is 51b in favour of the Paper Money geldmg. Royal Saxon has improved in the meantime, but still it appears as if Pink giote will hare the most friends. Royal baxon is handicapped on the 21b better terms than when Papatu finished in front ?>• , 111I 11 ie W.R.C. Handicap, which Pink isote should have won. Pink Note now meets Papatu at 81b and Royal 61b worse terms. Pink Note and Royal Saxon may be most in favour. These figures read in favour of Money iUin,e. but Meadow Lark and Paper Chase wiR have stronger riders up in the Flying Handicap, and the fact may make the handicap, which is practically cast on the same margins at a higher scale of vv eights, as in the Publican’s Handicap, a matter of secondary consideration. Hie Hazlett Gold Cup has been reduced, as everyone expected it would be, to a triangular duel between Limerick, Aussie, and Rapier, and that will be the order of favouritism.
