SPORTING.

D.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING. NIGHTMARCH WINS THE CUP. AUSSIE DEFEATED IN SHORT RACE. The Dunedin Cup meeting was opened successfully yesterday. Th'ough the weather was rather dull and threatening during the early part of the proceedings the clouds soon dispersed, and the latter part of the programme was favoured by bright sunshine and pleasant conditions, apart from a wind of some force. There was a large attendance, but it probably did not constitute a record for the course. The track provided good going, but was not particularly fast, and the fields had also to face the strong breeze when racing along the back stretch. The card provided some very interesting racing, and the decisions which Mr R. H. Aldwonh had to make concerning close finishes were promptly declared and accepted without question. Troilus was struck out of the Autumn Hurdles, for which Gayoma started a better favourite than Lancer. Heisler tipped out at the first hurdle and Amorist opened up a good lead by the time-they reached the stand hurdle, where the field was already strung out over a good deal of ground, with Guncase and Gayoma at the tail. Amorist increased his lead to about 10 lengths from Lancer and Tunamoe. Lancer commenced to gather up Amorist at the far turn, and got'on terms at the second Inst hurdle, where Tunamoe was also fairly handy. Lancer went on from Amorist, and after leading over the last hurdle stalled off a challenge from Tunamoe, and beat him by a couple of lengths. Amorist finished about the same distance away, with Rangatahi a moderate fourth, and the others right out of it.’ The favourite and Guncase made a poor showing. The pen went through the names of Solanum, Miss Marco, and Full Flight for the Trial Stakes, for which Paquito was made a short-priced favourite with Starshooter next in demand, carrying little more than half the support. The public were right on the spot, as they finished first and second. They got away from ;i fair start, but the favourite : was a bit slow on his legs. Membo, Rigmarole, and Red Boa were the early pacemakers with Starshooter next, and Paquito, wjio, was second last, apparently going well. Rigmarole took charge and led up the rise, where Membo and Red Boa retired, and Starshooter _ and Paquito joined the leader. Rigmarole, Starshooter, and Paquito straightened for home in lino, and each of them was under pressure inside the distance. Paquito stayed on best and beat Starshooter by a short neck. Rigmarole commenced to fade, but still finished close up third and well clear of Membo.

Arrowy and Gaybird were struck out of the President’s Handicap, ■ and backers went strongly for Toawai, who got badly placed in the early stages of the race. Tembroney, Amor, Royal Flower, and Red Racer were first to break the line, but the first-named lost bis place in the bade stretch, and was at the tail of the field going up the rise. Royal Flower and Red Racer carried on the running from Tardy. Greencloth, and Amor, and they formed the leading division as they turned for home, where Tembroney was running second last. At the distance Amor, Royal Flower, Tardy, and Red Racer were in close order,,rand in a good finish Amor beat the fash-finishing Tembroney by a short head. Tardy was the same distance away, with Royal Flower next. The favourite failed to get dangerous, and Tembroney with a better run must have been a winner. Royal Flower ran her best race up to date, and is on the improve.

Royal Tractor and Battle Flag were the withdrawals from the Publicans’ Handicap. for which Aussie was elected an odds-on chance. , Meadow Lark, who started second favourite, carried less than half of the support accorded the top weight, and anything else was showing a good price. Nincompoop gave trouble at the pot, and tli,ey were finally sent •away with him moving up behind the rest of the field. Rapier, on the rails, wa. cut out, and Aussie was a bit slow to move. Money Mine, Rin Tin Tin, Meadow Lark, Sudden Storm, and Silver Coot were smartest to begin. Rin Tin Tin, Sudden Storm, Silver Coot, Meadow Lark, a.n. Money Mine were showing the way at the far turn, and as they commenced- the rise Aussie was near the tail bf the field and on the rails, but he then commenced to make a forward move. Rin Tin Tin, Silver Coot, Sudden Storm, Meadow .jark. Money Mine, and Aussie were the leaders as they approached the home turn. Rin Tin Tin, Silver Coot, Meadow, Lark, and Aussie, with Money Mine, were in charge as they straightened for home. Rin Tin Tin drew out at the distance, and kept goina to beat Aussie by a length and a-half.- Money Mine was two lengths away, and then came Black Duke, Paperchaee, Wingatui. and Meadow Lark. Aussie ran a good race under his bic weight, and with a better run would have more seriously troubled the winner. Black Duke ran a good race, as he was well back at the far turn. All on the card went to the post for the Dunedin Cup, and they looked a welltrained lot as they paraded in the birdcage. Pink Rote started a fairly solid favourite. Circulation soon took jp the role of pacemaker from a good start, and had established several lengths’ lead by the time they left the straight, but as the field turned into the back stretch they commenced to close on the leader. At the six-furlong post Beau Getse joined the leader, whilst Royal Saxon and Nightmarch were in close attendance, with Pink Note next, and Papatu last. _ So they ran to the far turn, where the field was fairly well bunched, and Papatu commenced a forward move, and a little later Rotor, who had also improved his position, was sent back. Royal Saxon and Pink Note were in charge as they turned for home, in front; A Papatu, whilst Beau Geste and Circulation had dropped back-v Pink Note went to the front soon after they reached the straight, but then Nightmarch came with a strong run. and racing past the leader, beat him by about three lengths. . Papatu finished the same distance away, and Rotor, who raade up a lot of ground, was a bad fourth, just in front of Royal Saxon and Circulation. Pink Note’s run was probably made too I far from home, but Nightmarch, after being well placed the way, won handsomely. The win was well received, and the rvesentation of the 'gold enp occasioned a round of applause. Dutch Money dropped out of the Champagne Stakes and Pink Coat started a £4l 10s better favourite than Gold Tinge, whilst Stealth was a good third favourite. They broke away from a good line from which Pink Coat was smartest to begin. He set the pace, and turning up the rise, was in charge from Stealth and Gold Tinge, with Jaleux next and the ethers beaten off. Jaleux dropped out and Gold Tinge was in trouble before reaching the straight. Pink Coat was joined by Stealth at the distance, where both were under pressure, but the favourite stayed on best and drew away to win by three lengths. Gold Tinge was a bad third a couple of lengths in front of Blue Metal. Gold Tinge ran a bad race, but the winner had too ranch class for the opposition. Greyfinch and Star Stranger II were struck but of tire Berwick Handicap, which proved to he a particularly good betting race. The field ran in fairly close order along the back. Impertinence was showing out from a close-running field and Cupid’s Dart stumbled at the far turn, and Star Raid also dropped back. Star Raid had joined Impertinence in the lead at the home turn and then momentarily showed out in front! He did not, however, last long in charge. Waving Corn, who had been a bit slow to move, was well placed by the time she reached the home turn, and she raced to the front, inside the distance to beat Impertinence by nearly three lengths. I Killorna was close up third, and Star Raid was a good fourth, with Cupid’s Dart next. Sweet Refrain showed pace, but stopped badly after going five furlongs. The card concluded with Full Feather going out favourite for the' Stewards’ Handicap. He ran a good race, but Flying Mist proved a shade too good at the weights. Flying Mist was always prominent, and turned for home with Full Feather, Pangolin, Waterlow, and Camisader close up. The placed lot fought

out a good finish, and the three-year-old just failed to give away three years and 21 lb to the winner. The totalisator handled £25,765 for the day, as compared with £23,808 10s for the corresponding day last year.
