THE EXPANSION LEAGUE.
The appeal which is made in this issue for financial support for the Otago Expansion League may reasonably bo commended to the favourable consideration of the public, and specially to that of the mercantile interests in the community. The League has rendered a service of distinct value to the city and the provincial district during the period of its existence. It was constituted in order to counteract, as far as possible, influences which, it was perceived, were tending to the distinct disadvantage of Otago. It may be questioned, however, whether the conditions that obtain at the present time do not call as strongly as ever for the activities of this organisation. It covers a field that is peculiar to itself. Other associations have specific objects that may possibly in some respects be overlapped by the objects of the League. But none of them acts, in the same way as the League does,* as a species of clearinghouse through which all plans for the advancement of the interests of Otago may be gathered up and developed and prosecuted. There is none of them with the same comprehensive outlook. In one particular respect the Expansion League may be said to operate entirely alone. It is the one public organisation which energetically concerns itself in the promotion of what may be called the tourist industry in Otago. Upon its general scheme of service, however, all of it directed to the benefit of Dunedin and Otago, it deserves well of the community upon which it relies for the funds that are necessary for the maintenance of its activities.
