SOUTH OTAGO GAMES
(Fnou OuU Owv CoBKESI'O.VDK.N’T.) BALCLUTHA, August 28. Two matches were played on the Balcluthu Show Ground yesterday. The weather was fine, but the attendance of the public small compared with previous Saturdays. The first match took the form of a curtain-raiser, the teams being a mixed Clutha II and HI Grade, and a Green Island IV Grade; Clutha had the best of the game, and Ivor, by 9 points to 3. The winners’ score was made up of three tries, gained by Maker, Muir, and Milne, while Taylor scored a ~y for Green Island. Mr J. Cameron refereed. The Clutha and Owaka Senior Grade teams took the field in the South Otago Cup competition. Owaka arrived late, one man short, and Clutha supplied a substitute. The game calls for little comment, being in the nature of a “ walkover” for Clutha. which eventually won by 20 points to nil. The winners had a good back combination, made up of Tinslev Wilson (full), Riach, Gallagher, and Alexander (three-quarters), and Pennycook and M’Connell (five-eighths), with u Junior Grade man in L. Muir at half, in which position lie gave a very good display. Clutha’s backs made some good passing movements, in which M Connell, who has evidently benefited by his tour with the Otago sub-unions’ team, was conspicuous. in tlie first spell, at the very commencement, M’Connell kicked a goal from a mark, and shortly after M’Kerrow (the wing-forward, who played a determined game throughout) gained a try, which M’Connell converted. Cunningham was the next to score, and M’Conndl again converted. Pennycook, M’Connell. Gallagher, M’Korrow, and Alexander gave a fine passing exhibition, which tfnded in Alexander scoring well out, and Tinsley Wilson unexpectedly converted with an excellent kick. Gallagher scored the next try, but Wilson’s kick was a failure. The spell ended with the score: Clutha 21, Owaka nil. In the second spell Owaka made a much better allowing, M’Callum, Latta, and Baker being conspicuous in attack and defence. The latter on one occasion had hard luck in not scoring at the corner. Towards the end Honi Anderson opened up a movement in which the ball went from M’Connell to Pennycook, and to Gallagher, the latter scoring in a good position. Pennycook added the major points. The final score was: Clutha 23 points, Owaka nil. Mr J. M'Naman refereed. , The otlier Senior Cup match was played at Kaitangata between Clinton and Crescent, Clinton winning by C points to nil. For Clinton, Ritchie kicked a penalty goal and also a goal from a mark. Mr S. V. White refereed. The Senior Cup competition has now reached an interesting stage, and if Clinton beats Toko next Saturday and Crescent beats Clutha. there will still be one cup point difference between Clinton and Crescent, and each will have a match to play. At present Clinton is leading by three points. In the Second Grade competition, southern division, fqr the Boyd Cup, Romahapa and Clutha Valley are level. Star leading on the north side by two points. „ Saturday’s Second Grade games resulted: Star 11, Union 6. Clutha Valley 8, Waiwera ml. SOUTH OTAGO SUB-UNION. A meeting of the executive of the South Otago Sub-union approved the secretary’s action in sending a telegram of sympathy to C. Jackman on his unfortunate accident at Oamaru, when playing for the Otago sub-unions’ touring team. The following referees were appointed for next Saturday:—Alhambra (Dunedin) v. South Otago, at Balclutha, Mr D. M. Andrews; Toko v. Clinton, at Balclutha, Mr J. M'Namara; Clutha v. Crescent, at Kaitangata, Mr S. V. White.
VINCENT v. TUAPEKA. (Fkom Our. Own Correspondent.) ROXBURGH, August 27. The county fixture between Vincent and Tuapeka was played at Roxburgh on Saturday in excellent weather. There was a large attendance of spectators, and while the game as a whole could not be described as a very spectacular one, there was an occasional bright effort that appealed to the crowd on the line. The visitors took the field without some of their leading players, who were playing for Otago against Canterbury, and that fact probably had some bearing on Die result. Tuapeka won by 12 points to a. In the evening both teams were entertained by the Tuapeka Sub-union at dinner in the Goldfields Hotel.
