MILTON, August 27 PERSONAL.
With the impending return of Canon and Mrs J. C. Small from England, the Rev. E. B. Wethey will shortly relinquish his relieving duties at St. John s Anglican Church. Mrs Wethey and Miss Wethey were tendered a farewell tea by local lady friends, when the former was presented with a handsome cut crystal water jup and the latter with a dainty boudoir clock. football.
Only one match was played in the South Otago Northern Division on Saturday afternoon for the Boyd Cup, when Star defeated Union at Lovells Flat by 11 points to 6. Star lead the competition by two points. ; , . The match between ioko II and Union II (Dunedin), played on the local ground on Saturday, resulted in Tokos favour by 22 points to 3. The game was ragged throughout, and there were very few flashes of good play. Mr Joseph Powley refereed. 0 , The referees appointed for Sonin Otago matches next Saturday are as follows: —Alhambra 111 v. South Otago Second Grade representative team, Mr D. M. Andrews; Senior Grade Cup, Clinton v Toko, at Balclutha (Mr J. M'Namara); Clntba v. Crescent, at Kajtangata (Mr S. V. White).
GOLF MATCH. A team from the Milton Golf Club visited Kaitangata on Saturday alternoon to play a match against the Kaitangata Club. With one exception, the Milton lady* members won their matches, whilst honours were fairly evenly divided ■amongst the male players. Milton won by eight games to four, the individual results beint; (Milton names first).—H M. Rutherford beat S. M'Crostie; L. Clayton lost to J. Hay; D. M'Donald lost to J. Hadcroft; A. Hall beat; B. Totals: Milton 8, Kantangata 4. HEV. FATHER HOWARD HONOURED.
The parishioners of the Rey, bather Howard’s extensive parish (with boundaries at Taicri Ferry and Chaslands) foregathered in large numbers at yesterday morning’s Mass at the Milton Roman Catholic Church to honour their pastor on the even of his departure to attend the Eucharistic Congress and for two months’ holiday in Australia. After the service, Mr William Kirby on behalf of Father Howard’s parishioners and personal friends of other denominations, presented him with a wallet containing £l4O, accompanied with best wishes for a nappy holiday. The recipient feelingly responded. The Rev. Father Howard will leave by Thursday morning’s express to catch the Marama at Wellington for Sydney. BOWLING PAVILION.
The Milton Bowling Club has entered upon a progressive policy, and tho antiquated wooden pavilion was removed on Saturday afternoon, to make room for the erection of a more commodious brick pavilion with a veranda, more in keeping with requirements. The main room in the new building will measure 22 feet by 20 feet, with kitchen (13 feet by 8 feet) and an implement room adjoining.
LADIES’ HOCKEY
Several changes have been necessitated in the South Otago Association’s team for the Dominion hockey tournament at Timaru. The team, which will leave by to-morrow morning’s express, with Miss Farrell as manageress and Mrs I. C. Vidal as chaperon, will consist of Misses John ston, Dunn, M. Hawke, IS. Stewart, J Finch, I. Morris, A. Martin, P. Martin, W. Savage, B. Stewart, M. Scott, L. Vidal, K Scott, S. Vidal, E. Houliston. The foregoing are all members of Milton Club, with the exception of Misses Johnston (Otago Girls’ High), Finch (Kaitangata) Morris (Bruce), Dunn and Houliston (Balclutha).
OBITUARY
The last descendant of the M’Cullutn family of 12 who settled in Table Hill district in the ’sixties, has passed away in Mrs William Noble, of Tokoiti road, Mi) ton, at the advanced age of 83 years Three of Mrs Noble’s brothers emigrated to New Zealand in 1802-04, from North Bute,,Scotland, and were followed by their parents and other nine brothers and sisters in the Silestria, in 1867, The whole family settled at Table Hill. In 1872 Miss Margaret married Mr W. Noble (an 1858 Stvatliallan passenger), and they went to reside at Akatore, where they lived for 51 years, until they came to Tokoiti, Milton, Mr Noble, who died in 1924, represented Glenledi Riding on the Bruce County Council for the lengthy period of 22 years, and was chairman from 1900 to 1903. Mrs Noble leaves 10 daughters and one son to mourn their loss. The funeral took place at the Fairfax Cemetery, ',!ie Rev. A. M’Neur officiating.
