MANCHESTER UNITY.

At the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Valiev Lodge, presided over by i.P.U.M. Bro. C. H. Russell, there was a large attendance of mombeis to greet Urn i> D.G.M., Bro. 'ioung, in his own loagv. The’ now executive officers, P.G.M. Bw. Johnstone, I’.D.G.M. Bro. Young and i> Treas. Bro. Sligo, were introduced by P.P.G.M. Bro. Stabb, who apologised for the unavoidable absence of the remaining member of the executive, P. Sec. bru. Hopcraft. The district officers were ap nropriately welcomed by the acting b«.G., who referred to the pleasure felt by members on the appointment of another Valley member to the executive. A very old’ member of the lodge, P.G. b. Milher, also congratulated the P.D.G.M., stating that he had the honour of having proposed Bro. Young for membership in the Valley Lodge. Congratulations were also extended to the executive by P.G.’s. Bros. J. H. Stewart and D. M. Munro, P.P.G.M. Bro. J. H. F. Hamel, and representatives from the Cavorsham, Albion, Prince of Wales, Dunedin, and Hand and Heart Lodges. The P.D.G.M., Bro. Young, in replying, thanked members for their kindly references, and refened to the inspiration he had received from the association with the late P.P.G.M. Bro. D. S. Munro, when as a young member he was serving his apprenticeship to Oddfellowship. He also thanked those members who had helped and encouraged him in his work, and stated that he would do his best to live up to the high traditions of the Valley Lodge and the Otago district. At the conclusion of the meeting the Valley brethren entertained the visitors at supper. A large muster of members greeted the N.G., Sis. Gilmour, at the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Queen of Otago Lodge. Several members of the Pride of Kaitangata Lodge were present, and received a warm welcome. It was decided to make application to the district executive for permission to hold the usual meeting set down for May 10 on May 5, the Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge (Port Chalmers), having intimated its intention of officially visiting the lodge on the latter date. An invitation was also extended to lady friends of Prince of Wales for the occasion. The N.G. and V.G. reported on the recent district meeting at Roxburgh, at which they represented the lodge. Two new members were initiated into the order, the officers giving a splendid rendering of the various charges, which augurs well for the success of the lodge in the forthcoming initiation competition. At the conclusion of the ordinary meeting a well attended “leap year” dance was held, and it proved a decided success. At the usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge, P.G. Bro. Austin presided over a good attendance of members, in the absence of the N.G. Bro. Pithie, who is on the sick list. The N.G. extended a welcome to brethren from Prince of Wales and Milton Lodges, and also welcomed back into his own Lodge P.P.G.M. Bro. Clarke after a term of three years on the District Executive. The members stood in silence facing the roll of honour as a tribute to brethren who fell on Gallipoli, after which Permanent Secretary Bro. Brown delivered a short address on “Anzac. ” The delegates to the annual district meeting at Roxburgh submitted a comprehensive report on the business dealt with at Roxburgh. In connection with the approaching eightieth anniversary of the lodge, Bro. Sligo read a circular which is was decided to issue to all members of the lodge, appealing for a special effort for the welfare of the lodge. It was decided to hold a debate next lodge night, the subject being “ Cash v. Credit.” The principals for the debate were chosen, Permanent Secretary Brown giving some valuable advice on the subject of debating. The toast of the visitors was responded to by Prince of Wales and Milton brethren, after which supper concluded an interesting and enjoyable evening. It is expected that there will be a large attendance of members at the official visit to the Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge (Port Chalmers) on Tuesday next to welcome the newly-installed P.G.M. Bro. Johnstone in his own lodge. Three presentations will be made at the meeting, including two 75 membership medals. At the last meeting of the Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge it was announced that special arrangements had been made for the return train from Port to reach Dunedin in time for passengers to catch their last cars.

The members of the Loyal Albion Lodge entertained their firemen brethren at th© Fire Station on Wednesday night. Proceedings opened with a progressive euchre tournament after which a pleasant hour was spent in song and story. Among the toasts honoured were “ The City Fire Brigade,” ‘‘ Tlie Loyal Albion Lodge,” and “The Performers'” In responding to the toast of the “ Fire Brigade,” Deputy Superintendent Salmon referred to the close association of the Albion Lodge with the Fire Brigade, extending over many years, and expressed the hope that this Would continue in the future. Regret was expressed at the illness of a very old member of the lodge, and a former member of the brigade, Mr J. Carrington, and best wishes were extended for his speedy recovery. Items by several members of the brigade and lodge members contributed materially to the success of the evening.
