THE CRICKET ASHES
FUNDS IN MEMORY OF OWNER. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyrlght.l LONDON, April 19. A fund is being raised to place a stained-glass window in Rochester Gathedral, and a fund is also Ijeing raised to benefit deserving Kentish cricketers, in memory of the late Earl of Darnley, owner of the original cricket ashes.—Australian Press Association. In 1882 the Sporting Times lamented the defeat of England in a memorable test match, when England had been set 85 to win, and Spofforth, the “ demon bowler,” rattled them out for 78' The next day the Sporting Times came out with a memorial notice, edged deeply with black : “ In affectionate remembrance of English cricket, which died at the Oval on August 26, 1882. Deeply lamented by a largo circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances. R.I.P. N.B.—The body will ho cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.” In the whole match Spofforth took 14 wickets—seven for 46 in the first innings, se\Tii for 44 in the second.
