RACING NEWS. FIXTURES. April 12.—Westland R.C. April 14.—Greymouth J.C. April 14. —Midcllemarch meeting. April 14, 18.—Avondale J.C, April 18.—Reefton J.C. April 18, 19.—Manawatu R.C. The interest of all sportsmen in New Zealand and Australia will to-day be centred in the running of the All-aged Stages at Kandwick. The meeting of Limerick and Gothic has been locked forward to for a long time. I . Greenstone has now won three open I steeplechases in succession—the Invercar--1 gill Steeplechase, the Great Western Steeplechase, and the Riverton Steeplechase. He is owned by Mr J. S. Hazlctt, a son of the well-known Invercargill owner Mr W. T. Hazlctt. Cupid’s Dart is a useful three-year-old filly who should show further improvement. Her trainer had trouble in getting her into racing shape, but his policy of patience has been rewarded. Narrative is a racy-looking mare by Solferino fx-om Parable and has a free style of galloping. She should develop into a good winner, Eliminator was decidedly unlucky m the last race at Beaumont, _ losing a big stretch of ground through being chopped out at the start. She put in good work in the straight and did very well to get so close to the leader. . Apparently something happened during the running of- the last race at Beaumont, as two of the jockeys engaged in it took the earliest opportunity of saying what they thought of each other. The stewards at the Beaumont meeting were commendably keen-sighted, but rt would not have been surprising if they had focussed on the running of at least one of the other winners. .. In addition to the stake attached to the Autumn Stakes, won by Limerick at Randwick 6n Saturday. Mr H. A. Knight receives the breeder’s premium of 125sovs. Limerick’s stake earnings now amount to approximately £27,200. „ r Winalot, winner of the A.J.C. St. Leger Stakes and the Sydney Cup, was rought from the estate of the late H. Chisholm at auction in December last for 2100gns. Ho gave his first return when he won the V\ arwick Farm Autumn Cup, the winners portion of which amounted to about £BOO. In the parlv spring, Winalot, then in G. Price’s stabfe, was preferred to Trivalvo fnr the A.J.C Derby, and he ran his Victorian rival to half a neck. Winalot is now trained by J. W. Cook. . The 9.9 carried by Reremoana in the Great Easter Handicap on Monday is the highest weight carried by the winner since Machine Gun carried 10 ;4 t° victory in 1905 This is the weight-carrying record for the race, but in 1899 Boreas won under 9.12, and Cruciform annexed the race with 9.9 in 1902. Stormy was one of the many disappointments at Riccarton on Monday. He had been doing good work on the track, but evidently he prefers a dry track, ae he was never in a likely position during the race, and was the last to pass the post. An unusual dispute led to the lastminute withdrawal of Black Mint from the field paraded for the Sockburn Handicap at Riccarton on Monday (says the Press). It appears that the Wellington owner, Mr J. O’Meara, effected the purchase of the gelding from one of his partowners, but the sale was not ratified by the other members of the partnership, who held up the transaction. As a result of the ensuing argument, Black Mint wa_s not produced in the birdcage within the specified time, and the automatic scratching which this happening entailed cost his connections a fine of £2. Hie ownership was still in dispute at the end of the afternoon’s programme. Sir George Clifford and the late Mr G. G-. Stead have each won 16 of the 55 contests for the Champagne Stakes, first run in 1874, when it was won by Mr H. Redwood's Wainui. In 1884 the late Mr Stead scored his first win in this race with Trenton, and afterwards the following horses won in the yellow jacket and black cap:—lßß7, Maxim; 1890, Medallion; from 1893 to 1902 inclusive Strowan, Bluefire, Maunlicher, Bombshell, Multiform, Altair, Screw Gun, Formosan, Cruciform, and Orloff; 1905, Munjeet; 1907, Count Witte; 1908, Golden Slipper. Sir George Clifford’s victories have been earned as follows: —1885, Stonyhurst; 1903, Treadmill; 1904, Stronghold; 1906, Kirriemuir; 1910-11-12-13, Madam Madcap, Counterfeit, Autumnus, Nightwatch; 1915-16-17-18-19, Flying Start, Good Hope, Gamecock, Heathercote, and Miss Mimic; 1921, Winning Hit; 1923, Owlscombe; 1928, Prickles.

Katute has become wayward at the barrier, which is surprising, as Nelson Bingen’s stock are usually well mannered, and Muricata was a very quick beginner. Logan Holme finds a two-mile journey beyond him. If he wins again it will be over a sprint distance. The Rey De Oro filly Daphne De Oro is easily the best of her age over any distance. Although on the small side, the Derby win—er is well proportioned, and a fine advertisement for her sire. Avenger is on the top of his form, and his performance in the Express Handicap at Addington on Saturday was a good one. He was always one of the front lot, and : Daphne De Oro had to be hunted right out to head him off. Machine Gun paced a fine . .e in the Easter Handicap. He got a nice position early in the race, and finished well. One of the features of the Autumn Handicap was the manner in which Nourmahal finished on in third place. She has always been regarded as speedy, but lackinp: in stamina. Native Star went a capital race in the Autumn Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. She h-*d no chance of winning from the mark she was on, but she trotted solidly all the way, after a slow beginning. She is very honest. Wenlo, who won the Belfast Handicap at Addington on Saturday, is by Cathedral Chimes, and in most of his races he has been very unreliable. It was not surprising that he paid a big dividend. The well-known trotting trainer, W. J. Tomkinson, who has been laid up for over j. week, was on Saturday reported to be seriously ill. Hector s Own, who is now trained by K. Townley at Winchester, paced a good race in the Wilkin Handicap at Addington on Saturday, but stopped in the run home. , . Kempton, who won the Preliminary Handicap at Addington on Saturday, is a very fine trotter by Nelson Bingen from Pearl Pointer, u mare by Logan Pointer from Pearl Child. Kempton, who was bred by Mr H. F. Nicoll, is trained by C. Donald. I Talaro put up a fine performance in the Easter Handicap, considering he has not been in work long. He was always , prominent, and finished fourth. | In the Easter Handicap J. Bryce driver ! of Waitaki Girl, saw the winning post too soon, and left his mount without a finishing run. The race served to show that the brilliant Harold Dillon mare is ■almost back to her best, and ; she is sure of support in the President’s Handicap to-day. The High-class Handicap qt Addington to-day has drawn a fine field, and the public mav experience difficulty in locatiug the actual favourite. Providing he ' paces close to his best form, Logan Park will be one of the hardest for the backmnrkers to beat. . , , Fine fields -stand tueir ground for the concluding day of the Metropolitan meeting to-day, and horses that are likel.v to be supported are; —Sea Queen and Sarsaparilla in the Harvest Handicap: Native Queen and Pan Yan in the Oxford Handicap; Waitaki Girl and Talaro in the President’s Handicap; Jackie Audubon and Colene Pointer in the Halswell Handicap; Baron Bingen and Free Advice in the Welcome Handicap; Harvest Child and Sadie Huon in the April Handicap; Cannonball and Native Star in the Summer Handicap: and Logan Park and St, Maura in the High-class Handicap.

(From Our Special Reporter.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 10. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s • autumn meeting was concluded in dull and threatening weather, but beyond mild showers the meeting terminated without a serious fall of rain. The track had dried up considerably, and provided good going without being firm enough to assist records. There was a fairly good attendance, and the card provided some interesting sport, which, however, did not appear to create any great sporting enthusiasm. It really appears as if the Canterbury Jockey Club will have to consider the why and wherefore of the Riecarton meetings failing to hold attractiveness in the sporting world. Riccarton is one of the best racecourses in the world, and the size of the track gives every horse a better chance than is obtainable elsewhere, yet there seems to be something lacking in connection with some of the fixtures held there. A new members’ stand, such as exists at Trentham, might be one point towards the solution of the difficulty, which undoubtedly faces the Canterbury Jockey Club. Sociability between members is a dominant feature at Trentham, whilst the same opportunity is unobtainable at Riccarton. Be what it may, there is no doubt that Riccarton is going back, and the solution of the difficulty rests with the Canterbury sportsmen rather than with the Canterbury Jockey Club. Moratorium was regarded as the best of good things on paper in the Peerswick Handicap. Ellis waited with him behind Karitane and Crossbow until reaching the false rail, and then sent his mount through to win nicely by a couple of lengths. There was nothing much between the others. Star Raid was the only scratching in the Autumn Nursery, for which Concentrate started a good favourite. They got away from a good line, and Great Star soon became prominent in front of Rin Tin Tin, Nightmaxch, Chide, Viscount, and Impertinence. Amourette and Concentrate did not begin too well. Rin Tin Tin headed Great Star inside the distance, and then Concentrate came with a strong run, but failed to reach Rin Tin Tin, who beat him by a length. Great Star was half a length away third and Niglitmarch was fourth and Chide next. Concentrate would have won if he had been better placed over the first couple of furlongs. Don Jose and Barryanda were withdrawn from the Yaldhurst Handicap, and First Sight started a good favourite. They were sent away from a walk-up start, in which First Sight was a bit slow, to move. Nincompoop soon took charge and showed the way to Stormy and Battle Colours, aud then came Sir Roy, Lucy Locket, and First Sight following each other in that order. Nincompoop was still going well when he led into the straight, but at the distance Battle Colours closed on the leader, and a little later First Sight and Sir Roy joined them. First Sight appeared to bo a winner, but in a fighting finish Sir Roy beat him by a head. Lucy Locket drew up and finished two lengths away, with Battle Colours next. The ground First Sight lost in the early part cost him the race. After, the race the stewards held an inquiry into Sir Roy’s running earlier at the meeting, and it was decided that there was such a difference in the weights that no action bo taken. Tho inquiry was not warranted by the facts. Rotor was struck out of the Addington Handicap. Amor and Philippic took up tho running, whilst Fair Exchange dwelt, and Luminant lost several lengths through being slow on her legs. Amor and Philippic led Fair Exchange and Starflight round the top and into the straight. Starflight and Fair Exchange then closed on the leaders, but the latter failed to sustain his effort, while Starflight came on and won by a length from Amor, who beat Philippic by a similar distance Fair Ex-

change was another two lengths away, and Luminant never got near tho rest of the field. All on the card went out for the Great Autumn Handicap except Black Mint. Backers mostly went for Rapier, Hynanna, and Lady Desmond. Front Rank, Don • Jose, Rapier, and Assurance dwelt at the rise of the barrier, and Thorndale ami Treshara were smartest to begin aud led out of the straight, where Rapier was running last and several lengths away from the leaders. Thorndale was clear of Tresham racing past the furlong post, and turning into the back Assurance ran up to Thorndale, and they wore followed by Trcsham, Lady Desmond, Set Sail, Don Jose, and a bunched field except Rapier. Oratrix, who was running on the outside of the field, ran up to the leaders when going round the far turn. Thorndale and Assurance led round the top from Tresham Lady Desmond, Oratrix, and a bunched lot, with Rapier still last. Tfiorndale and Assurance disappeared when approaching the false rail. Hynanna then arrived with a strong run on the outside, whilst Lady Desmond, who was momentarily in charge, and Oratrix appeared on the rails. Hynanna sustained his run and, racing past Lady Desmond, won by a length. Oratrix was two lengths away, and Set Sad finished another couple of lengths off. Then came Assurance, Front Rank, and Iresliam. The winner put up a meritorious performance. Oratrix might have boon closer if she had obtained a run nearer the rails instead of racing on the outside until reaching the straight, where she changed her lino and came through on tho rails. Rapier never regained his lost ground and was practically last from start to finish. He was in the position of a top weight who could not afford to lose ground in a fast-run race. The trio that went out for the Challenge Slakes were sent away from a walk. Cimabuc and Eulalie wont on from the favourite. Rounding the top Eulalie was steadied and Cimabue led her and Reremoana into the straight. Rcrcmoana moved up at the distance, but Cimabue stuck well to his task and the former had to be ridden out to beat him by a neck. Eulalie was easing up eight lengths away. Golden Armour was made a short-pnoon favourite for the Papanui Handicap, anil after they got away from a walk-up start she drew to a good lead. Honeycomb was slow on his legs. Golden Armour was four lengths clear of Wild Work, who was followed by Valves And Rotor as they reached tho straight. The favourite was still well clear nt the distance, and apparently doing well, but Rotor put in a strong claim and Golden Armour had to bo ridden out to beat him by a head. Gild Work was two lengths away third and Valves was next. Booster and Crown Area were the popular picks for tho Templeton Handicap. Gold Brick sot a solid pace from Booster, and they showed tho way into the straight, where Crown Area, who had been running last, sailed past tho leaders, and won easily by two lengths from Booster, who beat Solrose by three lengths. Gold Bricx was half a length further back. _ The winner scored one of the easiest wins of the meeting and on firm going his success suggests that ho must have been very hard to beat in the Great Easter. RIVERTON RACES. CELERITY II AGAIN SUCCESSFUL. (Pee United Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, April 10. The Riverton Racing Club’s annual meeting was brought to a conclusion to-day in beautiful weather. The attendance was large for an off day, and the brack was in good order. Tho totalisator handled £15,604 compared with £11,934 on tho third day last year. The total for tho meeting was £60.462 10s against £50.604 last year. Beautitul weather was again in evidence, and the attendance for an off day was very good, while the track was again in splendid order. The day brought to a dose what must rank as the most successful meeting ever held by the club. The gate receipts and tho totalisator showed a substantial increase each day, and tho racing was always interesting, while some spirited finishes took place. The gate returns tor the day amounted to £620 6s 6d, an increase of £193 14s on last year. Ihe total gate takings for the w .®™ £3197 3s 6d compared with £roo( nis ia->v year. The totalisator also showed a substantial rise, being £9858 10s in excess ot U 'lhe weight-for-age event, the Orepuki Stakes, opened the racing. Some Signal was slow to move at the start. Mine was first to break the line, and led down the back from Mudlark, All bmiles, and Ngambie. The last-named moved into second place across the top, followed by All Smiles and Slanther, The order to the straight w-as the same, with Red Heather starting a run- Money Mine was still in front at the distance, and stayed there to win by three lengths from Red Heather, with All Smiles a neck away, a head in front of Slanther. Then came Cetchela, Clarenson, -and Ngambie. West Dome fell just after entering the straight when second last. In the Wakatipu Trot, Baker Girl, Continuance, and Coy Bells, were slow to move. Boy Blue took up the running from Eiffel Tower. .The leader broke when entering the straight. Continuance went on from Eiffel Tower, Sea Hawk, Kerrwood Bell, and John Logan. Secret Link broke when passing the stand, me order of the leaders was unchanged down the back and across the top, where Lenamhor was noticed travelling fast, and making up ground on the leaders. me order into the straight was Eiffel Tower, Continuance, Sea Hawk, and John Loga.n. Halfway to the judge Eiffel lower broke badly. An exciting tussle home resulted in Lenamhor getting up to win by a nose from Kerrwood Bell. Continuancei was three lengths back, followed by Eitffel Tower, Sea Hawk, Shady Spot, Boy Blue, and Baker Girl. , Celerity II was a very warm order tor the Fiord Handicap. Apache was first to break the line from Schottische, Queen Balboa, and Celerity 11. Entering the back stretch Schottische just showed out from Apache, and then came Queen Balboa, Celerity 11, and Wingatui. The lastnamed made a forward move at the tar turn, but received a check. Schottische just led into the straight from Apache, Queen Balboa, Doleful Ditty, and Celerity 11. At the distance Celerity II got an opening, and Wingatui came through on the rails. The favourite wore down the leaders, and won by half a length from Wingatui, with Queen Balboa halt a length away, four lengths m front of Apache. Then came Doleful Ditty, Bilbo, and Schottische. , „ . , A good start was effected in the Fairfax Hack Handicap, Cupid’s Dart being first to fihow out from Busy Lad and Strathnaver. Approaching the far turn Red Racer ran into third berth, and this was the order across the top. Entering the straight, Cupid’s Dart was just clear ot Busy Lad aud Strathnaver, while helony got an opening on the rails. At the distance Cupid’s Dart disposed of Busy Lad and Strathnaver, but Felony came strongly to down the favourite by a head. Strathnaver was four lengths away, five lengths ahead of Redleaf, and then came Busy Lad and Red Racer. In the Aparima Steeplechase, Calibration showed the way to the first fence from Nylotis and Blazing Light, while Royal Fashion put in a bad jump and lost a lot of ground. There was very little change in the order over the first round, Nylotis and Calibration always being together. Royal Fashion made a nice jump at the water. Nylotis was in front of Calibration going down the back with Blazing Light and Maungamoe a good way back. Going across the top Nylotis raced away from Calibration, with Royal Fashion running into third place. This was the order to the finish, Nylotis winning by five lengths from Calibration, with Royal Fashion eight lengths away. Then came Blazing Light and Maungamoe. E. Mackio rode a good race on the winner. Who was always going well. .... , . . In the Oliai Trot, Llligro failed to go away, and Baker Girl was slow to move. Kensitas took up the role of pacemaker from Cathedral Spire, Baker Girl, and Smoker. The order was unchanged passing the stand. Kensitas was still in front going into the back from Cathedral Spire, while Spring Chimes was making up ground. At the far turn Spring Chimes was almost on terms with Kensitas. Across the top and into the straight the order was Kensitas, Spring Chimes, Princess Thorpe, and Hushahye. The favourite stayed on well in the run to the judge, and won by one and a-half lengths Princess Thorpe was 50 yards away, followed by Hushahye, Kerrwood Bell, Baker Girl, Continuance, and Smoker. Latin Quarter was first to catch the eye from a good start in the Waipango Hack Handicap. Solzia led into the hack from Latin Quarter, Money Mine, and Redleaf. At the far bend the order was the same. Across the top Redleaf was in third berth, close behind the leaders. Solzia just headed Latin Quarter into the straight, where the field closed up, and in a stirring finish Solzia faded out and Latin Quarter won by a length from Strathnaver, who was a neck in front ot Redleaf. Money Mine was a head away, and Solzia was last. The meeting was brought to a conclusion by Black Duke, a very warm order, winning the Farewell Handicap. Gay Sonnet lost ground at the start and --tuple Dichton streaked away to lead from Taboo and King Balboa. Going to the far turn Apple Digbton still led from Taboo, Wingatui, and King Balboa. This was the oi'ler to the straight, where Black Duke was prominent. A good fanisli resulted in Black Duke getting up to beat King Balboa by half a length. Taboo was two lengths away, followed by Gay Sonnet, Wingatui, and Apple Dightou. METROPOLITAN TROTS. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 10.
