GRADING FIGURES FOR MARCH. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 9. The Dairy Division’s grading figures for March show:—For butter,a decrease from March, 1927, of 20.1 per cent., at 5990 tons; and for cheese a decrease of 21.7 per cent, at 7230 tons, compared with the corresponding period of the preceding season. The eight months’ figures show: For butter, an increase of 5.7 per cent, at 64,797 tons, and for cheese a decrease of 1.4 per cent, at 02,703 tons. Converting both butter and cheese into butterfat equivalent, the increase is 3.44 per cent. FRUIT EXPORT. HAWKE’S BAY SHIPMENTS. (Per United Press Association.) HASTINGS, April 10. This season’s shipments of pears and apples from Hawke’s Bay will exceed those of the past two years, the total at present being 131,085 cases. These figures include 0249 cases of apples to the United Kingdom, 19,153 to South America, and 19,683 crates of pears to the United Kingdom. _______ LONDON METAL MARKET. (United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 10, The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated April 5, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London; — Tallow.—There was a. good demand at auction arid prices of all description advanced for better grade mutton. Present spot quotations are: Mutton—Fine, 42b per cwt; fair to good, 37S 6d to 40s per cwt; beef—sweet and/or mixed, nominal; fair to good, 37s 6d to 39s 6d; mixed fair to good, 37s fid to 395; gut, etc., 34s to 37s 3d. Apples.—Trade is quiet. The Tainui and Northumberland shipments are mostly cleared except for large Worcester Pearmains and Gravensteius. Prices are: — Cox’s Orange, 18s to 25s per case; Worcester Pearmain, I2s to 16s; Gravenstein, I2s to 14s; Ribston Pippin, 13s to Iss; Dunn’s Favourite, 13s to 16s. Hemp.—The Manila market is easier for near positions. Distant is steady. The closing value of A Grade is £37 15s to £3B ss, according to position. The sisal market is steady. Only small business is being done in early shipments of No. 1 at £36 10s to £37, and later shipments at £36 ss. The value of No. 2 is £34 10s to £35. For New Zealand there is slightly better demand for high points, and business is reported at £32. Fair grade is quiet. Nominal closing values for April-June shipments are £32 and £29 10s respectively. Oats. —The market was firmer in the early part of the month, but dull at the close. English choice white seed is quoted at 40s, and feed 365. Plate is offered by re-sellers at 30s 9d and April-Mny shipments are quoted at the same price. The nominal value of New Zealand A Grade Gartons is 35s 6d. ?’eas. —Maple spot trade is slow, English best making up to 675. The New Zealand market is quiet but steady. Business is reported in March-May shipments at 69s Cd. Sellers quoted March-April shipments and April-May shipments at 70s, Tasmanian at 77s 6d. For blues there is a better demand. A Grade Tasmanian afloat are quoted at £2O 10s and April-May shipments at £2O. and New Zealand £lB to £l9, ex store. Beans. —Tho English market is firm with a steady demand, best winter making 48s and fine spring 56s to 58s. New crop Chinese horse July-Septomber shipments were sold to the Continent at £lO per ton. Cocksfoot. —Tho demand for Danish is irregular, the nominal value being 87s c.i.f. Wool. —The Bradford market is quiet but firm. Present quotations for tops are:—64’s (Merino), warp 4s 8d per ]b, 50’s halfhred 2s lOd per lb, average 4s 7d per lb, 40’s prepared 2s 2d per lb, 56’s super halfbred 3s 8d per lb.
