EXTENSIVE BUSH FIRES.

HEAVY DAMAGE IN SCENIC RESERVE. 2000 ACRES DESTROYED. (Per Un'ted Peess Association.) NELSON, January 20. Bush fires on an extensive scale have been raging in the Nelson district for some days past. The records kept by the Forest Service show that the humidity is the lowest on record. Two thousand acres of scenic reserve have been destroyed near Kawatiri. The fire which came up from the Wairau Valley, has so far not ascended to the forest protection areas on the adjacent hills. Every effort is being made to conserve the large areas of forest Much valuable protective work has already been carried out by the Forest Service towards the West Coast. The season is the .driest within memory.
