WEATHER SUMMARY.
CENTRAL OTAGO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) OPHIR, March 1. The report of the Ophir meteorological station for the month of February is as follows: Average reading of barometer at 9 a.m., 29.88 in; highest (on 11th), 30.10 in; lowest (on 2nd), 29.41 in. Average shade temperature at 9 a.m., 60.9 deg (January, 64.2 deg); highest (13th), Sldeg; lowest (22nd), 48.0dcg. (In January the highest was 75.0 deg and the lowest 44.0 deg.) , . Dry-bulb temperature in shade: Average maximum, 75.2 deg (1926, 68.8 deg); average minimum, 47.7(Jcg (1926, 47.0 deg): mean for tho month, 60.5d0g (1926, 57.9d0g). The extreme maximum was 87.9 deg on tho afternoon of tho 12th; extrema minimum, 32-ldeg on the 24th. Wet-bulb readings: Average maximum, S9.4deg; average minimum, 45.7 deg; approximate mean, 52.5 deg; average humidity (daytime), 40 per cent, of saturation. Maximum temperature in sun: Average, 106.9 deg (January. 104.8 deg); highest, 126.0 deg on the Bth; lowest, 74.3 deg on tho 17th. Over lOOdeg Fah. was recorded on 20 days. Minimum ground temperature: Average, 38.1 deg (January, 39.2 deg); lowest, 22.1 deg on the 23rd. On 10 nights tho temperature fell below freezing. Average clearness of sky: 9 a.m., 62 per cent.; 10 p.m., 61 per cent. Recorded at 9 a.nr., 21 days were calm, 1 day N., 1 day N.E., 2 days S.W., 1 day W.. and 2 days.N.W. High winds occurred on tho 14th, 17th, 21st, and 27th—all about two hours’ duration each. Tho rainfall was as follows:—9th, 7 points; 17th, 23 points; 22nd, 2 points; 27th, 135 points;—total, 1.67 in on four days. February, 1924, .96in; 1925, ,98in; 1926, 2.09 in. In the matter of temperature the month fell into two- well-defined halves. The first two weeks were warmer than any other two consecutive weeks throughout the summer; The latter two were as cool as the average in March, and although the days were mostly warm the average was reduced by the coolness of tho nights. In the former half there was not one night of frost, whereas during the latter half 10 nights of the 14 had frost on the ground. The respective averages for the two periods in the shade were 66.6dcg and 54.3 deg. As for moisture, with the average warmth of 107 degrees in (ho sun and only 32 points of rain for 26 days, the month was really a dry me, but this was relieved by the copious fall of 135 points on tho morning of the 27th. Extreme day-and-night ranges of tern-, peraturo occurred as follows:—24th, morning 22.2 deg, afternoon 123.1 deg, range 100.9 deg; Bth, morning 32.1d0g, afternoon 126.0 deg, range 93.9 deg; 26th, morning SO.Odeg, afternoon 122.2 deg, range 92.2 deg; 23rd, morning 22.1dcg, afternoon 112.5d0g, range 90.4 deg. The rainfall registered at Oturohua for the month of February was 260 points, of which 185 points fell on tho 27th. Previous lo that the month had boon very dry.
