SENTENCED TO DEATH
ABD-EL KRIM'S LIEUTENANT. DESERTER FROM FOREIGN LEGION. (Piets Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. 7 LONDON, February 10. (Received Feb. 11, at 5.5 p.m.) A message from Casablanca states that Kleins, the French deserter, sufieri g from wounds, appeared in court on a stretcher. He was sentenced to death and military degradation. —A. and N.Z. Cable. Klems, who was a corporal in the Foreign Legion, deserted to the Riffs before operations commenced, and became Abd-el Krim's secretary and chauffeur, as well as his gunnery expert. _ He actively participated in the organisation of the Riff fighting lino, instructed the gunners, raided French posts, carried off arms and ammunition, and was finally captured in an ambush specially laid for him by a French intelligence officer. Klems was known by the Riffs as the German pilgrim.” Abd-el Krim gave him three wives, four houses, two horses, and mule.
