GREEN ISLAND SCHOOL.

ANNIVERSARY SOCIAL. Memories of old school days were revived when the 74th anniversary of the Green Island School was celebrated in the local town hall last night. The Mayor (Mr W. T. Smellie) presided over a fair attendance of young and old ex-pupils. The Chairman, in extending a welcome to t hose present, referred to the continued prosperity of the school, At the jubdee celebrations of the school it had been oecided to fonn an ex-pupils’ association, said Mr Smellie, and he wished to make an earnest appeal for members. 'lhe object ol the association wag to bring ex-pupils into closer touch with one another and to cooperate with the committee to promote the general welfare of the school. Community singing under the leadership of Mr J. II Mathioson was indulged m, and a. concert programme followed. The following contributed items; —Cornet duet, Messrs Kerr; recitation, Miss .Christie; clarinet solo, Mr K. Nyc; and recitation, Mr tV. M ‘Elrea, _ , The accompanists were Miss Johnson ana Mr A. Nye. The two spades which wore used to plant commemorative oak trees at the jubilee celebrations last year wore presented to Mr William Watson, representing the School Committee, by Mr James Ilowden, on behalf of Mr' Adam Wright’s pupils, and Mr David Noil, on behalf of Messrs Allan and Duncan's pupils. The inscript ions on t!io spades were as follows: “Presented to the Green Island School by Mr Adam Wright’s pupils, this spade was used on February 13, 1926, when planting a commemorative oak on the site of tile first and second schools which v.ero erected by the pioneer settlers of the Gicen Island Bush district in 1353 and ’.[£4.” “Presented to the Green Island School by Messrs Allan and Duncan's oupiis. This spade was used on February 13, 1926. when planting a commemorative oak on the site of the third school erected in the vicinity of the Prosbvtorian -Manse, Ditri.-; •• an. in 1862.” Several ox-pupils spoke in remmisfent vein of their school da vs, 1 me liq.ll was then cleared for a .1 nvc.
