‘ANNUAL MEETING. TOWN-PLANNING AND TIMBER USE. (Pbb Dotted Paasa Association.} HAMILTON, February 11. The annual meeting of the New Zeor land Institute of Architects was held at Hamilton yesterday. Mr W. Page (Wellington) presided, and in an excellent presidential address reviewed the work of the year, and pointed out the ideals of architect* and their service to the community. He made a plea for more beautiful towns and support for the Town Planning Board. He commented strongly on the growing practice of advertising on unsightly hoardings, maiming civic beauty, describing them na unattractve, drab, and sordid; and stressing the need for controlling them. A deputation wae received from the sawmillers’ representatives, who pointed out the trouble in utilising all the products of the log. Mr Valder, chairman of Ellis and Burnand (Ltd.), said the problem was a serious one. The industry had to be relieved of the surplus of lower grade timbers caused by the limitations placed on their use. He suggested that means be found to modify specifications which stipulated heart timber when 0.8. could be used equally well, and asked the sympathetic co-operation of the architects. By forcing the consumption of high-grade timbers the Government waa actually increasing production costs. The new council of the New Zealand Institute of Architects met to-day for the election of officers. Mr Frank L. Moodie, of Auckland, was elected president, and tributes were paid to the work of Mr William Page, past acting president. Mr F. Greenish, Wellington, was appointed secretary, and Mr A. S. Mitchell treasurer. It was decided to hold the next annual meeting at Invercargill.
