UNIVERSITY MATTERS.

MEETING OF COUNCIL . The Council of the University of Otago met yesterday afternoon, the Chancellor, Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., presiding. Others present wore Sir H. Lindo Ferguson, Dr J. Fitzgerald, Messrs L. D. Ritchie, J. A. Moore, J. C. Stephens, W. J. Morrell, .1. W. Scurr, J. C. Thomson and C. M. Gilray. FINANCE AND MEDICAL COMMITTEES. The Finance and Medical Committees reported having considered the necessity for mi additional nurse at the Dental School and having resolved to recommend the council to authorise Dr Pickerill to make the necessary appointment at 25s per week. Confirmed. It was also reported that concerning a letter from the Doan of the Medical Faculty covering a letter from Dr J. U. Williams asking for a further remuneration for £lO 10s in respect of the year 1926. It was resolved in view of the special circumstances that the extra £lO 10s bo paid.—Confirmed. The committees further resolved that.the council be asked to consider the desirability of making an application to the Dunedin Savings Bank for assistance to the University. —Confirmed. It was resolved that a report from the Dean of the Dental Faculty regarding the refusal of tile Education Department to subsidise gifts to the Dental School was recommended to bo held over till next meeting,—Confirmed. The Finance Committee reported that the following requests had been approved:—(a) Request from Dr Hercus for the payment of £7 5s 5d from the Dean’s Fund, (b Request from Professor Strong for the purchase of two dozen stools and three dozen folding chairs at a cost of £l9 4s and £lO 16s respectively. (c) Request from Professor Adams for the purchase of £lO worth of lantern slides, (c!) Request from Dr Denham that Miss Fyfo be paid £25 for the yoar to carry on work in (.he library of the museum, such work being necessitated by Mr Skinner’s absence, (e) Request from Dr Drcnnan for a grant ; of £l7 from the Dean’s Fund.—Confirmed. WORKS COMMITTEE. The report and recommendations of the Works Committee were adopted. HOME SCIENCE BURSARIES. Professor Strong recommended the award of Home Science Bursaries to the following students: Misses L- I. Annaa, D. M. Carter. N. Copsoy, M. A. Gunn, E P. Ilervoy, H. H. Jackson, I. B. B. Liddell, M. M. Mauson E. M. Menzies, M. E. M’Pheo, 11. C. G. Pledger, E. P. Reeves. C. L. Slyfield, M. B. Steel, I. A. Tot man and F. I Tyson. CORK ESPON DENCE. A letter was received from the Dean of the Medio-d Faculty stating that the faculty considered it desirable to oiler the facilities of the Medical Library to members of the profession outside Dunedin, the librarian to make abstract.-, etc., on payment of a fee. ft. was derided to refer the matter to file Medical and finance Committees for report. The Doan of the Medical Faculty wrote recommending (ho re-appointment of Miss H. M. S, '] homson as research scholar to receive £IOO from the tir Jon n Roberts Fund and recommending Mr L. S. Rogers for the Bachelor memorial modal.—Both matters were confirmed. The Administrative Secretary of the Blanket Socierv wrote forwarding a cheque for £SOOO for "the, endowment of a scholarship to bo railed the ‘d-iidy Truby King Scholarship” to enable medical students to continue (heir studies in child welfare. The Regt.-i.rar was instructed to write thanking the I’lunket Society for its munificent gift, . Mr L. M.' Satterthwaite (vice-president ot the Commerce Facility Association) wrote asking that students who have completed their accountancy professional examination should receive their diplomas at the capping ceremony. —The matter was referred to the Professorial Board. Miss Gladys Cameron wrote forwarding her /resignation as from the end of February.—The resignation was accepted with regret, and it was decided to write to Miss Cameron thanking her for past services. A telegram was received from the Edu cation Department advising that the department was making full investigation of the finances of university colleges, and that, therefore, the question of providing for medical and dental schools was postponed. —The letter was received and it was decided that the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and treasurer and registrar should proceed to Wellington and interview the departments concerned and make a strong endeavour to place the finances of the council on a stable basis A letter was received from Dr Newlands tendering his formal resignation as clinical lecturer on surgical and stating that ho wished to continue Kis services as a clinical teacher.—The council accepted the and expressed its gratiftation that Dr Newlands would still be connected with the Hospital. A letter was received from _ Messrs Burroughs, Wellcome and Co. stating that they desired to present to the university a small show-case and specimens in materia medica. Accepted with thanks. Dr Inglis wrote recommending that Mr H. A. A. Aitken be appointed at a remuneration ot £5 5s per month to do portion of the work of Mr R. Gardiner resigned.—Agreed to. . The Secretary ot the Otago Hospital Board wrote advising that Dr James Thomson had been appointed medical superintendent and Dr Alexander Gillies senior resident surgical officer at Dunedin Ho--pital.—Received. |
