AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. MEETING AT AUCKLAND. FIRST DAY’S EVENTS. (Pbk United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 11. The New Zealand amateur athletic and cycling championship meeting was commenced at the Domain this afternoon, when the three miles flat, men’s and ladies’ relays, running, broad Jump, putting the IGlb shot championship, ami the heats of the remaining events were decided. The track was in good order, and drying after the rain on Thursday, while there was a slight breeze. In the absence of R. A. Rose, the three miles championship was regarded as a certainty for J. W. Savidan, the Auckland champion, and he did not disappoint his supporters. He won very easily in ISrain 9sec, which time is Usee faster than the standard and 18 2-sscc faster than Rose’s winning time last year. Had Savidan been pushed he would have broken 15mm without difficulty. Two other Aucklanders, Kells and Brown, formerly of Otago, were second and third. Competing in his first New Zealand championships since his return from South Africa, E. G. Sutherland showed that be had not lost his prowess in the field by winning the running broad jump and putting the IGlb shot championship. J. Lynch, who won the Auckland broad jump championship last Saturday with a leap of 21ft lOin, 2in further than Sutherland’s effort to-day, failed disappointingly, and was not placed. The Wellington ladies had a walk-over in the relay championship, through Auckland defaulting owing to the provincial champion. Miss M. M'Neil, straining her thigh in training before the race. It is extremely doubtful whether she will start in the championship to-morrow. The men’s relay was won by Wellington after an exciting contest with the Wanga-mti-Taranaki team. The Dominion sprint champion, M. Leadbetter, ran excellently, and won his heats of both sprint championships. Some great racing is promised in the cycling finale to-morrow, when R. W. Lamb, the Victorian champion, F. Grose, C. Flett, T. Oakley, and M. P. Byrnes contest the championship honours. Lamb rode very well to-day, and showed that he has fully recovered from the slight injury he sustained in the fall last Saturday. He and Grose were outstanding figures in the heats. The quarter mile running championship to have been decided to-day was put oil till to-morrow. THREE MILES CHAMPIONSHIP. Savidan took the lead early, and after a mile had been covered was followed by Priestley, Kolls and Brown. Priestley made a good effort soon after the eighth lap was entered, but collapsed and withdrew. Savidan won easily _by 120 yards, with Brown a similar distance away third. I Williams (Auckland) 2 Olsen (Otago) 3 Also started; Jenkins (Wellington), Maitland (Wanganui-Taranaki), Eastwood (Wellington). This race promised to be a runaway for Williams right up to 200 yards, but he then eased, and Johnston came through to win by one foot. There was half a yard between second and third. Time, 22 2-ssec. 120 YARDS HURDLES CHAMPIONSHIP. First Heat. Shirley (Auckland) 1 Darby (Wanganui-Taranaki) 2 Also started: Kalaugher (Wellington). Kalaugher was leading with Shirley at the third fence when he hit hard and withdrew. Shirley, jumping well, won easily by eight yards. Time, ICsec. Second Heat. Stenning (Wanganui-Taranaki), Douglas Ross (Wanganui-Taranaki). On the last lap Grose went out in front, with Lamb in pursuit, but the latter was beaten by a clear length. Oakley was five lengths further back, and Douglas who qualified for the final through Lamb being ineligible for the title, finished a few yards in the rear. Time, 2rnin 39 3-ssec. THREE MILES CYCLE CHAMPIONSHIP. First Heat, Grose (Canterbury) 1 Oakley (Wellington) 2 Byrnes (Auckland) 8 Also started: Blakeway (Auckland), Adamson (Wanganui-Taranaki), Harrison (Wellington), Nicholson (Otago). Grose and Oakley fought out a stirring race, the former winning by a clear length. Byrnes was half a length away third. Time, Smin 6 3-ssec. Second Heat. Lamb (Victoria) 1 Anson (Canterbury) .. .. 2 Casey (Auckland) 3 Also started; Eoss (Wanganui-Tara-naki), Stenning (Wanganui-Taranaki), Flett (Wellington), Ferguson (Canterbury). Lamb made a great effort in the final lap and, with a well-sustained run, won with ease by three lengths from Anson, with Casey third. Ferguson was fourth, and qualifies for the final. Time, Smin 8 3-ssec. The following are the points already scored for the interprovincial trophies:— Championship Shield: Wellington 17, Auckland 7, Wanganui-Taranaki 4, Otago 9, Canterbury 9.
