“A WHITE ELEPHANT.”
BLUFF’S NEW WHARF. HARBOUR BOARD DISCUSSION. (Pee United Pbess Association.) INVERCARGILL, November 26. Bluff’s new wharf, which to date has cost £50,000, promises to be a white elephant. During a discussion at the Harbour Board meeting it was stated . that the depth at the end was only 9ft, that a rock shoal practically prevented big ships berthing lower down, and that in order to dredge a safe channel an expenditure of at least £IOO,OOO would be re--01 A communication from Captain Shaman, marine superintendent of the Shaw, Savill Company, was read, m which he stated that 99 per cent, of the shipmasters woudl condemn outright the new wharf. It might be useful for tying up the Bluff fishing fleet, but it was otherwise a useless structure, a mad-brained idea, and a waste °* Captain Lindsay (harbourmaster) said the structure would be of value * n ing the pressure on the old wharf at rush periods, and would be very useful for small Ij °The board decided to continue the work of having the channel to the new wharf ami the entrance to the channc* deepened.
