PROHIBITION IN NORWAY.

HEAVY DEFEAT FOP. "BUYS.” ♦ The cable messages last month respecting the result of the prohibition plebiscite in Norway left some room for doubt as to the issue of the poll. The papers to hand by the mail this week show that the plebiscite resulted in a severe defeat for the “drys”—or, to be more accurate, the “ comparatively drys ” —because the law as it stands permits the sale of liquor containing less than 21 per cent, of alcohol, or about equal to the strength of much of the spirits sold in Great Britain. The latest returns were:— - Against prohibition .. 518,972 For prohibition .. .. 408,945 Majority against .. .. 110,027 The corresponding figures at the last referendum were: — Against prohibition .. 289,417 For prohibition .. .. 474,594 Majority in favour ~ 185,177 > The Copenhagen correspondent of the Chicago Tribune states that, coincident with the Norwegian prohibition referendum, the Danish Governmental Committee publishes its result of a year's investigations in Norway, Finland, and America on the working of prohibition. The committee has arrived at the conclusion that the time is inopportune “to experiment with prohibition in Denmark.” The recommendations of the committee will be considered shortly by the Danish Parliament.
