DISTINGUISHED SOLDIERS.
ARRIVAL IN' NEW ZEALAND. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND November 25. The ships’ company of the Arawa, which arrived from Liverpool.to-day, included two (personalities whoso arrival in New Zealand for the first time is of particular interest to returned soldiers. They are Lieutenantcolonel Dawes, ship’s surgeon, who retired in 1921 after 26 years’ service in the Indian Army, during which he made several trips in hospital ships that went to Ansae and Suvla Bay to pick up wounded New Zealanders and Australians; and Captain G. Norker, M. 0., who, while in the Royal Field Artillery, was the middleweight boxing champion of the army. Ho is very cheerful in the role of smoko room steward. “Since my retirement I have been adopting those opportunities of seeing more of tho world,” said Lieutenant-colonel Dawes, ‘‘and I am enjoying it immensely. I mado many acquaintances among the heroic patients who were under my care in those hospital ships, ami I expect I shall meet many under happier circumstances.” Jdr Norker has served in a similar capacity in the White Star Lino, and says ho is pleased ho look the opportunity of coming to New Zealand, where during his stay, ho hopes to become acquainted with boxing anti boxers. He was wounded at Yprcs early in 1915. and as a result spent six years in hospital. This experience and the 'urdon of metal tubes in his knees do not seem to have depressed, him, and the high opinion in which ho is held by the passengers seems to indicate that he was active enough during tho voyage.
