Ministerial. Mr Massey has made further progress in his health during the last few days, and is mow free from sciatic pains. Our Wellington correspondent reports that the Hon. Mr Guthrie has recovered from his recent illness and is about again. Archbishop Julius left by the first express yesterday on his return to Christchurch. Our Wellington correspondent reports that Lady Pomare, wife of Sir Maui Pomare (Minister of /Health) has gone into a private hospital here for an operation to-day. An Auckland Press Association message states than Mr L. A. Johnson, of Whangaroi, has been chosen to represent the Reform Party in the Manakau electorate. The Hon. H. L. Michel, who has been visiting Central Otago, was a passenger for the north by the mail train yesterday morning. Mr T. O. Fox, engineer to the. Invercargill Town Council, was a through passenger for Christchurch by the express train yesterday. Mr C. Stanley Smith was a passenger by yesterday’s express from the north, on Ins way to Rotorua to attend the annual conference of the Now Zealand Newspaper Proprietors’ Association. Messrs T. Somerville and H. Harris were <■ passengers by the second express yesterday for the north, en route to Wellington to attend the annual meeting of the Master Printers’ Federation., A Wellington Press Association message announces that Mr J. W. Collins (secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce) Has been appointed a member of the Publicity Board. Mr W. A. Flavell (general manager of the Westport Coal Company) and Messrs G. L. Denniston, E. C. Hazlett, James Begg, and ‘C. W. Chamberlain (members of the board of directors) left Dunedin yesterday morning for Westport to attend a meeting of the company. Mr J. M‘G. Wilkie, engineer to tho Otago Harbour Board, left yesterday morning for Christchurch to attend the engineers’ conference. He will afterwards visit tho West Coast for the purpose of seeing the Rimu Flat dredge at work. Mr Wilkie expects to return to Dunedin early next week. A Wellington Press Association message reports that the Railway Department is sending two more officials abroad. Mr W. R. Davidson (Assistant-Chief Engineer) and Mr J. Pickard (of the local Traffic Office) will leave by the Makura to-day on a tour of investigation in Canada, the United States, Groat Britain, and Europe. Mr Justice Alpers arrived in Dunedin last evening by the first express from Christchurch on a brief visit to relatives. He will leave to-day on his return, and will bo sworn in at Christchurch on Thursday by Mr Justice Adams. He yyill commence his official duties at Napier on February 24. Mr Justice Alpers landed at Napier in 1877 when 10 years of age, and acquired his English nationality at that town. An Auckland Press Association message states that Lord Somerleyton, P.C., K.C.V.0., and Lady Somerleyton, of Somerleyton Hall, Lowestoft, England, reached Auckland by the Makura after a short stay in Australia-. Before taking his seat in the House of Lords, Lord Somerleyton was a member of the House of Commons for 14 years, representing the LiberalUnionist interests in North Suffolk and Halifax. Lord Somerleyton served with distinction in the South African war. He was chairman of the Liberal-Unionist Council under Mr Austen Chamberlain until the -amalgamation of the Liberal-Unionists' and the Conservatives. He was formerly chairman of Messrs J. Crossley and Sons (Ltd.), Halifax, and was honorary secretary of the King Edward’s Hospital Fund. With Lady Somerleyton he will leave the dominion next April, returning to England via t/io Panama Canal. Lord and Lady Helper, of Nottinghamshire, arrived by the Makura from Australia (states a Press Association message from Auckland). While in New Zealand Lord Helper will do some deep-sea and trout fishing, and will later visit the South Island for deer stalking. Lord and Lady Helper will leave Auckland by the Aorangi on May 12.
