THE CROMER MURDER
TRIAL OF SWABODA, Difficulties of prosecution, Press Association—By Telegraph-Copyright, COLOGNE, February 15. Franz Swaboda was again remanded on the charge of murdering Private Cromer. One of the chief difficulties of tho case is tho necessity for tho prosecution proving that death was tho direct result of a bullet wound inflicted by the accused. The lapse of time since death has necessitated an exhaustive search for documents, certificates, and witnesses. Many more weeks must therefore pass before the actual trial, if any, begins.—Reuter. On February 7, 1919, Private Cromer, of tho Otago Infantry, was shot dead by a band of German youths who had sworn to cut off the hair of girls fraternising with the members of the Army of Occupation. Private Cromer was attempting to protect a girl, with whom he had been conversing, when he was shot. Franz Swaboda, whom his accomplices denounced as Having fired tho shot, fled to the unoccupied territory. Ho was arrested on January 28.
