ADELIE LAND
ANNEXATION BY FRANCE SIR DOUGLAS M-AW SON CONCERNED. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, February 15. The French Government recently proclaimed Adobe Land, Kerguelen Land, and the islands of Saint Paul and Amsterdam as a sanctuary for seals and penguins and other sub-Antarctic fauna. Sir Douglas Mawson, in dealing with the subject, expressed the hope _ that France would abandon tho annexation of Adobe Land in favour of Australia. Ho claimed that M. D'Urville, th French explorer, did not go ashore at Adobe Land, lie simply sighted it, and coasted for two days, whereas the Australian Antarctic expedition spent three years exploring Adobe Land and other Antarctic lands. The Daily Mail, commenting on Sir Douglas Mawson’s hope says that nothing is known in London concerning tho French actions. The Daily Mail adds: ‘‘Wo do not suppose that Franco attaches much importance to the nominal ownership of a territory so forbidding. Though it is indisputable that M. D’Urvillo discovered an annexed A delie Land in 1840, tho ownership scorns to bo a matter for friendly discussion.”—Sydney Sun Cable.
