PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. Watson), Crs Anderson, Smith, Asher, Dodds, Love, Borrie, and Lunn. The Mayor referred to the recent death of Mr A. Coleman, who was an honest and trustworthy inspector. A motion of condolence was carried. CORRESPONDENCE. The Rev. C. B. Jordan invited the Mayor and councillors to an Anzao service.—The invitation was accepted. Mr D. Henderson wrote for permission for the Dunedin Pipe Band to use the band ■ rotunda \next Monday evening,—Permission was granted. Mr J. M’Connochi© applied for a lease of the front portion of the dairy factory buildings.—The letter was referred to the Works and Reserves Committees to report. REPORTS. Th© Works Committee reported that, in addition, to the usual routine work, the men had been finishing the footpath and roadway in George street and square. Grass had been cut in Bellevue place, a dozen pans had been retarred, and a truck of asphalt toppings had been mixed. A sewer in Harrington street above Burns street, and one from the Police Station, had been cleared. The sower on the domain had also been opened for Inspector Armour in order to locate the leak. The committee recommended that the street at the school be tarsealed at the beginning of next financial year; that the Beach road be widened at naval shed when material was available to do it at minimum coat; and that the corporation be closed in at an estimated cost of £220. —Cr Lunn said the work at the corporation yard had been talked of for yours, and it was necessary.—Cr Anderson # moved that the clause referring to the yard bo sent back to the committee,, as the corporation staff could not be spaced for the'work at present.—The Mayor expressed disappointment that provision had -not been made for mixing quantities of asphalt — Cr Borrie said that if the corporation men put in the foundation work the total cost would be lessened.—The amendment was carried, and the report thus amended was adopted. The Finance Committee reported receipts amounting to £59 Is Id, and accounts foil payment amounting to £516 6s 7d.—This report was adopted on the motion of Cr Dodds. In reply to a question, Mr Tait said it was intended in two months to trim back overhanging trees. The Gas and Water Committee reported that in January 25 tons of coal produced 276,009 ft of gas. The acting-foreman reported having repaired a water service in Mary street and cleared another in Burns street. The water officer reported that the reservoir was down 2ft 3in, and that in his spare time he had been cutting grass and broom and cleaning out the race at the little reservoir. He also attended the engineer at MihiWaka while getting information required by the council.—ln moving the adoption of the report, Cr Anderson said the water supply to Bellevue_ place needed improvement. The reservoir was down about 10ft at this time last year.—Cr Lunn said waste of water should he stopped before the reservoir got very low. FAULTY DRAINS. Cr Lunn read a report from the Health Officer about a drain alleged to he faulty. The Mayor took exception to the Statement, and said a drain which was m a very bad state at the beach should first bo attended to. The council then went into committee to meet the local members of the Harbour Board.
