OTAGO A. AND P. SOCIETY.
LUCERNE AND TURNIP COMPETITIONS. Tho committee of the Otago A. and P. Society, although disappointed with tho support it has received in tho post few years, has decided to continue to arrange for the lucerne and field turnip competitions. Tho Waituki Dairy Company offers a shield for tho best three acres of non-irrigated lucerne, and Messrs Nirnmo and Blair a trophy for a similar area irrigated. In connection with tho field turnip competitions tho New Zealand Coal and Oil Company offers three six-ton trucks of Kai*angata coal, delivered at Stirling, for tho best five acres of swode turnips. Tho committee recognised that it would not bo equitable to make this an open competition for any district, and ;t has divided tho competition among three districts. One competition will include Inchclutha, Stirling, and Taieri. The second competition will includeClutha and the balance of Bruce, and tho third Tuapoka and Waikouaiti districts The only conditions imposed are that, considering Iho valuable prizes offered and the cost of inspection, there must bo six farmers in each district competing, and that each competitor will make two entries of turnips from his area at tho society’s Winter Show. For the export cheese competition the Otago Harbour Board offers a trophy and the society £2O in cash to tlie cheesemakors whoso factory output for tho season gains the highest aggregate number of points according to the Government grader's certificate. Tho committee considers this a most important competition. ns it deals with the season’s output from tho factory, and expects that there will bo keen competition for tho prizes.
