The steamer Banmokr sailed at noon yesterday for Bluff and Sydney to discharge the remainder of her case oil cargo from Port Arthur (Texas). The Opihi was shifted to a berth at the Birch street wharf yesterday to discharge the balance of her coal cargo. She is to go to Port Chalmers this afternoon to undergo survey. On arrival the vessel will berth at the Rattray street wharf to discharge a large quantity of general cargo. AORANGI LEAVES SOUTHAMPTON. The Union Company advises that the R.M.S. Aorangi left Southampton on Friday, January 2, for Vancouver, via Jamaica, Panama, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, THE CANADIAN CONSTRUCTOR. The Canadian Constructor, which arrived at Auckland an Saturday morning with cargo from Montreal, waa to leave the northern port yesterday for Australia. The vessel will return to Now Zealand in February to load for New York, Boston, and Halifax. WEST CALEBA FROM SAN FRANCISCO. Cable advice received by Messrs Tarnbull, Martin, and Co. states that the Swayne and Hoyt lane steamer West Calera left San Francisco on December 31 with general cargo and timber for discharge at Auckland, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne, and Sydney. She is due at Auckland about January 26, and Dunedin about February 8. PIPIRIKI PROM NEW YORK. Cable news received (by the local agents for the A. and A. NEW STEAMER FOE CHINA LINE. The first of the two now steamers ordered by Messrs G; S. Yuill and Co. for their Australian-China service, will, it ia expected, 'bo launched this month. She ia being built by the Whampoa Dock Company, of Hongkong. BARADINE TO LOAD. The P. and O. Branch lino steamer Baradine is duo at Wellington to-morrow from Sydney to commence loading for England under the auspices of the New Zealand Shipping Company. The vessel will load also at Lyttelton, Tokomaru Bay, and Napier. She will sail finally from the latter port about January 27 for London, via Panama. STORM STILL AGROUND. According to advice received by Messrs H L. Tapley and Co., the Canterbury Conv pany’a steamer Storm, which went aground in the Wanganui River near the entrance on December 31, is still hard and fast. The vessel’s loading from Dunedin for way porta and Wanganui will be taken by the Gulo about the end of tins week. WRECKED STEAMER KONINT. The wrecked steamer Konini continues to prove a big attraction for day excursionists from Bluff. The position of the wreck reurqinfl unaltered, and she shows no signs of breaking up. Since the Komm was abandoned, easterly winds have prevailed, and she has got off lightly, but she is expected to break up rapidly when the next westerly blow occurs. LARGO LAW SAILS. The Seales’® chartered steamer Largo Law completed loading 2500 bales of wool yesterday afternoon at Port Chalmero, and sailed at 5.30 p.m. for Dunkirk, Bremen, and Hull, 'via St. Vincent. The vessel is carrying a full shipment of wool and hemp, bavin" loaded part cargo at Napier, Wellington, and Timaru. She should arrive at Dunkirk about March 3. THE CANADIAN CRUISER. Messrs H. L. Tapley and Co. advise that the Canadian Cruiser is to leave Adelaide today for Dunedin direct. She should arrive on January 16, and will load wool and other products for New York, Boston, and Halifax. The vessel will complete loading at Lyttelton, Wellington, Wanganui roadstead, Napier, and Auckland. ROTORUA LEAVES PANAMA, Cable advice received by the New Zealand Shipping Company states that the Rotorua arrived at Colon on January 2 from London and Southampton, and sailed from Panama on January 3 for Wellington and Port Chalmers. The vessel is due at Wellington on January 23. CITY OF EDINBURGH IN PORT. The Ellerman, Bucknall Lino steamer City of Edinburgh, running under the auspices of the A, and A. Line, arrived at Dunedin yesterday afternoon from New York, via Panama Auckland, Wellington, and Lyttetton. The vessel wa»s berthed at the Victoria wharf to discharge several hundred tons of general cargo and case oil. The City of Edinburgh left New York on November 15, and cleared the Panama Canal on November 23. Fair weather prevailed until the vessel had passed Pitcairn Island, when a cyclonic storm was encountered, which lasted for two days. The wind blow fiercely from various directions, accompanied by high, confused seas, and torrential rain fell almost continuously for about 36 hours. After the storm area was passed fine weather prevailed to arrival at Auckland on December 22. Captain H. MA3MOA LEAVES CARDIFF. A cable message received by the Sbaw, Savill Company announces the departure from Cardiff on January 2 of the Maimoa for Auckland and Lyttelton. The vessel which is making the voyage via the Cape of Good Hope, is expected to arrive at Auckland about February 12. FLOATING MINES. The danger of floating mines still exists in the Mediterranean. Only a few weeks ago the passenger steamer Sphinx, of the Messageries Maritimee, reported having sighted a mine 20 kilometres south of Ccrigo Island, and the British steamer Gartmore signalled having passed a floating mine in 42deg. 47 lat, N. and 4dcg. 41 long. E. PERSONAL ITEMS. Captain F. B. Evans, at one time master of the R.M.S. Maunganui, and now a solicitor in Sydney, arrived in Wellington on Sunday last on a holiday trip. Captain W. A. Waterson, formerly master of the Chinese liner Ling Nhm, is a through passenger from Sydney by the Maunganui on his way to take up an appointment at Papeete. . Captain S. 0. Payne, fourth officer of the Maunganui, resigned from his position at Sydney. Mr D. Strath has joined the vessel in his place. NEW CABLE STEAMER. The new cable steamer named The Cable, has been delivered from her builders, Messrs Alexander Stephen and Sons (Ltd.), Glasgow, and is on route from the Clyde for Singapore, where she will be stationed. I":til'd with all the latest devices, both for navigation and for her special work, the vessel has a carrying capacity for 500 miles of cable. The special paying out and picking- up gear lias been designed to stand a strain of 2)0 tons at four knots per hour. With cable costing between £3OO and £4OO per mile it will bo seen how important it is to reduce the proportion of slack. The Cable bas a speed of about 12 knots, a range of 6000 miles—she burns oil fuel —and is capable of repairing a fault within a few hours. She is 2371 t in length, has a beam of 35ft, and a displacement of 3000 tons.
