GISBORNE HARBOUR WORKS.

THE MODIFIED SCHEME. AN INTERESTING DISPUTE. (Pee United Press Association.) GISBORNE, January 14. An interesting dispute has arisen between the Marino Department and Harbour Board over the new harbour scheme. When a poll of the ratepayers was taken the first instalment of the works was said to include a sectiop of the outer breakwater. in® proposals have now been modified and bhe outer breakwater , has been eliminated in the meantime. . The Minister of Marine has pointed out to the board that it should acauaint the ratepayers with the fact that the department considers the modified scheme has fault, and would not prove satisfactory. The board’s engineer at to-day’s meeting defended his dan, holding that whether a harbour with ingress and egress at all times for vessels drawing up to 15ft will or will not give much satisfaction to the district is a matter for the decision of the board, ns is also the question whether the district receives value for the money expended. A big deputation was appointed to wait on the Minister.
