HIGH SCHOOL v. CHRIST’S COLLEGE. VISITORS IN STRONG POSITION. The annual match between the Otago Boys’ High School and Christ’s College was commenced at Carisbrook yesterday in beautiful weather and on a fine wicket. The High School team gave a good but rather slow exhibition of batting, the score being kept down by Christ’s College’s good fielding, which, though somewhat weak in the sbps, was sound on the whole. The throwins to_ the wicketkeeper, however, showed little judgment. College batted forcefully, and _ kept thsir opponents hard at wort fielding, High School’s fielding, though disappointing for the first quarter of an hour, was afterwards very good, and the ..work of the wicketkeeper (Tys‘6h) was superior to that of the College wicketkeeper,, who, however, did not receive the same support from the rest of the field as Tyson did. College’s bowling was consistently good, Hartley-Smith (five for 67) and Sugden (four for 52) being dangerous. The School team had little variety in its bowling, which was not strong. High School batted first, Wilson and Allan opening. Allan scored well, playing with confidence any leg balls from Hart-ley-Smith. He scored two to every one' Wilson added, but when 16 he was bowled by Sugden. Holden joined Wilson, but Hartley-Smith, the fastest of the howlers, took his wicket before ho could score. Young was next, and shaped well till at 10 he was bowled bv Sudgen, the total score then being 43. Rodger joined Wilson, and the scoring became rather slow. S. Wilson’s bowling troubled W. G. Wilson, who stepped right in front of his wicket and blocked two. A third caught his pads when he was in that position, and' bo was dismissed at 28, which was compiled in an hour. Bardsley joined Rodger, and baited brightly, but not long, and Tyson . was next. - After two lucky escapes from being run out—due to bad throw-ins—Tyson hit out and quickly put on 24. He then went out to a fine one-handed catch in the slips by Sugden. During his partnership with Rodger 100 went up after 90 minutes’ batting. With six wickets down for 129, the luncheon adjournment arrived. Prvde went in "when play was resumed in the afternoon, and the scoring became faster. At 140 a ball from Hartley-Smith went off Rodger’s pad and bowled him, and MacDonald joined -Pryde, who continued to do all the scoring. M'Donald then got a four to the leg boundary, and brought 150 up for two hours’ batting. One run later Pryde wa s dismissed by a good ball from Hartley-Smith, who got Leader with his next. Priest, the last man in, stayed longer, and he and MacDonald carried the score to 172. when MacDonald, at 13, was bowled by Sugden. College commenced their innings about 2.45 p.m.. Miles and Lester opening. Miles scored at a groat pace, and executed some pretty late outs. At 73 lie bad scored 44 in 34 minutes, and then gave a slight chance which Pryde at point grasped Hamilton joined Lester, and the°scoring continued to be very fast. For 48 minutes’ play 100 went up, and 120 had been scored for one wicket at the afternoon tea adjournment. Photographing the teams seemed to be regarded as more essential than punctuality, and the commencement of play was delayed for several minutes. On resuming Lester scored a few more runs and was then smartly taken at point by Pryde. 4^3—2 —54. Wilson, who joined Hamilton, did not last long, his wicket falling io a good length ball from Young. 138—3—5. Hiatt was next, and the scoring slowed dewn considerably. The 30 minutes immediately following the adjournment produced only '25 runs, and scoring continued to bo slow till about 5 p.m., when, after malt had been caught off a square cut by Holden, at point, Jackman and Hamilton became associated. The score then mounted more rapidly, and a four by Jackman brought 200 up just on time (5.30 p.m.). High School.—First Innings. W. G. fYilson, Ihw, b S. S.
