DEBT TO SEAMEN.
THE SHEEPOWHERS’ FUND. £155,000 REMAINING. (Per United Press Association.! WELLINGTON, December 15. The annual meeting of the trustees of the Sheepowners’ Debt to Seamen Fund was held yesterday, the Hon. E. Newman presiding. The report stated that 526 applications for relief had been considered, and payments to sailors and dependents during (he year totalled £6119. It is anticipated that assistance required for permanently disabled sailors and dependents will be not less than £2OOO per annum for some years to come. Assistance was also given in certain oases in the form of loans without interest, and the usual distribution of Christmas presents to the children of the funds’ beneficiaries was made. The fund’s capital, after an expenditure of £40,000. now amounts to £155.000. The Chairman expressed appreciation of the assistance rendered by the Salvation Army, the Navy League, and other voluntary helpers. Ho wished that the sul> scribers would fake a keener interest in the fund, which was unique and peculiar to New Zealand, where again it was peculiar to one class of residents —the sheep farmers.
