DEATH OF KATE DOUGLAS WIGGIN.
AUTHOR OF "PENELOPE." Kate Douglas Wiggin (Mrs George C. Riggs), the American writer and philanthropist, died at Sunrlbury Hill, England, on August 24. Twenty year? ago few American writers enjoyed greater popularity than Kate Douglas Wiggin. whose "Penelope" travel books were read and enjoyed bv many. '1 hese books, three in number, dealing with England. Scotland, and Ireland, described the progress of a young atid observant American girl through these countries. They were informing books, written in simple, straight-forward language, and their charm lay chiefly in the writer's unfailing sense of humour and the new angle from which she saw many of the simplest happenings of our national life and character, the first of the three, ''Penelope's English Experiences," appeared in 1893. A large number of other works were written bv Kate Douglas Wiggin. Those which were most popular in America dealt with the rural life of New England, introducing the reader to all the oddities of village life and the quaint characters seemingly so far removed from the hustle of America.
