EXTENSIVE BUSH FIRES.

A TOWNSHIP THREATENED. (Per United Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, October 11. Bush fires driven by an easterly wind to-day threatened to wipe out the township of Kokiri on the Midland railway line. A five-roomed house owned by Mr Percy Roado was destroyed in the absence of its oocupants. ■ The fires began the previous day, the changing wind* driving them towards the township where the sohool and sawmill were endangered. One stack of timber was burned. The residents fought the flames till a patch of fallen bush stayed their progress. Latest advices are that the fires are dying out, but the district is enveloped in a thick pall of smoke. Bush fires are also in evidence at Dunolhe, Runanga, Barrtown, Coal Greek, and the Cobden Hill districts, but no serious damage is reported.
