OBITUARY.
MR JOHN STONE. Mr John Stone, an old and respected resident of Dunedin, died suddenly at 8 o’clock last night. The Late Mr Stone was bom in London 59 years ago, and came to New Zealand in 1875 in the sa.ling ship Morope. In 18 3 he joined his father in the directory publishing business. The firm commenced business as printers in 18S0 in Crawford street, and later moved to their present premises in Anzac square. Mr Stone wat one of the original founders of the Dunedin Cycling Club in the days when the high bicycles were ridden. At a later period he was a prominent member of the Kaituna Bowling Club, and was also a Past Master of a Masonic lodge. He took an active part in the formation of the Master Printers' Association, and was one of its first presidents. Chess was a favourite pastime of the late Mr Stone, and for a lopcr time ho was an enthusiastic member of the Otago Chess Club, and was considered a fine player. The deceased had been in a poor state of health for several years, and was thus prevented from taking a prominent part in public affairs. At the time of his death he was a member of the Commercial Travellers’ Club and the Otago Club. The deceased is survived by his only son, Mr John Stone, farmer, Puerua, and two brothers and two sisters—Mr_ G. A. Stone, manager of the firm’s branch in Wellington ; Mr Harry Stone, who is in the Government service at Ashburton; Mrs R. Pairman, Sawyers’ Bay; and Miss L. M. Stone, of Christchurch.
