An announcement was made some time ago lhat a steamer—said to be the former Orient liner Orontes—is to make a tour of the world’s chief commercial ports, her mission being to exhibit the range of British manufactures. Her voyage will extend to 41,000 miles, occupying over 150 days’ steaming, while the calls for exhibition purposes will extend over 130 days. Exhibition decks have, it is stated, been provided, affording space for all classes of exhibits, from heavy machinery to the smallest and lightest of goods. Accommodation is aloO provided for representatives who travel with the exhibition. During the tour more than 40 ports will be visited. It is understood that a groat deal of ground will he covered, and that important British industries will be represented as fully as space permits. Birmingham, Manchester, Hull, and Ulster will, for example, provide collective exhibits, and special departments will show such products as electrical goods, aeroplanes, steel goods, jute, rubber, and other articles. It is not intended that the enterpriss shall compete with established British trade; on the contrary, the object is to assist it by showing the actual goods which may only be known by catalogue in the markets visited. As a rule goods will not bo carried for sale. Perhaps not the least important feature of the arrangements placed at the disposal of exhibits is the daylight kinematograph section, which will show a great variety of industrial films on board ship. Although the itinerary has not. yet reached Australia, it appears probable that South American ports will first he visited, and then Australia, inasmuch as in the list of ports it is stated that at Rio Janeiro, Buenos Ayres, Melbourne, and Sydney the vessel will stay seven days; six days will bo at Wellington, four at Fremantle, Adelaide, and Brisbane, and shorter times as Hobart and Dunedin. The steamer will call at Japanese ports, India, the Straits Settlements, Algiers, and other places. The trip is expected to occupy about 10 months.
