One unexpected result of the opening of the Arthur’s Pass tunnel that appears likely is that there will be an increase of pedestrian traffic over the pass. This apparent anomaly may be illustrated by the following concrete example quoted by the Christchurch Press:—A party of residents from near Rakaia recently drove across to Barfield. Here they caught th e train for Arthur’s Pass, and spent a delightful time walking across the great divide. Although there is no hotel at Arthur’s Pass, there is one conveniently situated at Otira, and here the night was spent. In previous years the thought of t]jje return journey up the hill would surely rob even hardy pedestrians of sleep, but now the tunnel is available, and the return journey was made by its means. That the spread of wild pigs is becoming a serious matter in the back country is amply borne out by a settler who resides in the North Taranaki district, about 12 miles, from Aria. The farmer stated that he engaged two men with dogs to clear a 1500-acre block of land, which was overrun with pigs, and in seven week* these men had accounted for 900, using 1100 rounds of ammimilion. After a day’s work in destroying the pigs, survivors would be found the following day on the trail, consuming the carcases of (he dead animals,’ and the men would then follow im ami continue the work. The farmer stated (hat hp had seen a boar destroy two lambs mid consume (hem in a very short time. Some of the nigs grow to a tremendous size, and they are increasing in numbers to a marked degree in ihc hack country.
