A furious storm hampered the resale work. Only three out of 12 military officers were saved.— A. and N.Z. Cable. WARNING TO SHIPPING SPECIAL RADIO MESSAGE.* FINE SERVICE RENDERED. (From Oim Own Correspondent.) . WELLINGTON. March 12. The special radio weather messages sent out by tho wireless stations and ships in the South Pacific arc proving of use to the vessels traversing in that zone. Up to the present the Awanui station, in the fur north, does not co-operate. Dio Kona on her last voyage to Now Zealand received warning of r.u approaching storm, and the captain at once prepared for it. When the cyclone struck the ship shortly afterwards she was hove to, and remained in that condition for 28 hours. The wireless message from Suva indicated the centre of the storm and its course. The steamer Niagara also received and sent out the warning, and made preparations to meet the gale. It is suggested that the Awanui station should repeat the warnings, thus enabling ships leaving New Zealand for the tropics 'to take measures to avoid or prepare for approaching cyclones. Ships with abnormal barometrical readings now send out the information by radio, and these announcements, in conjunction with those from the fixed stations, enable more accurate prognostications to be made. The various stations in the Fiji Group forward reports to Suva by tlie land lines, and Vavail 1 also transmits information. On the occasion of tho cyclone on the the 13th of last month tho barometer fell to 28.5 inches.
