A Chicago message reports that the attorneys for the Armour Packing Company have commenced legal steps to finance the purchase of the Morris Company. A subsidiary company will be formed, with authority to issue 160,000,000 dollars worth of stock. The merger will ■create the biggest packing concern in the United States. Px-evious/to negotiations, the Government was asked for its opinion on the merger in the light of the monopoly laws. The Government, however, declined to give an opinion, stating that its action (if anv) could not be decided upon until the comnanies had taken actual steps. —A. and N.Z. Cable. EXPORTATION OF GOLD. WASHINGTON, December 26. A statement has been ksued from White House that the United States maysoon begin the exportation of gold.—A. and N.Z. Cable. THE LIQUOR LAW. NEW YORK, December 26. There were eight deaths on Christmas Day, due to wood alcohol poisoning; otherwise the Prohibition enforcement was stricter than on any previous holiday. This resulted in a record low number of intoxication cases in the local courts. —A. and N.Z. Cable. ANTI-CATHOLIC INCENDIARISM. OTTAWA, December 26. (Received Dec. 27,' at 7.35 p.m.) A message received from Montreal says that the tenth Catholic edifice to be burned in the recent wave of anti-Catho-lic incendiarism is the church of St. Thomas d’Alfred, near Buckingham.
