THE CALCUTTA SWEEP
LONDON, November 25. Apropos of the declaration that the Calcutta sweepstake is illegal under the Indian code, the London Daily Mail, in a leading article, remarks that the general public in Britain certainly hopes there will be no interference with the very popular sweepstake. It is true that interest in it has recently grown out of all proportion, bub the intention attributed to the Calcutta Turf Club to curtail the sale of tickets should meet any reasonable objection. If the sweepstake is illegal now, it has always been illegal, the paper adds. The Indian Government must have winked its eye in the past, and no harm will be done if it continues winking. The Calcutta sweepstake is one of the annual flings “that countless people enjoy who are not gamblers.’’ It is an institution, and if abuses have crept in. such as the sale of tickets at enhanced prices, and the sale of forged tickets, it is better to eradicate the abuses than to dispense with the institution.
