THE SCULLING RACE
AN AUCKLANDER’S VIEWS. {FbOU Oob Own Correspondents.) AUCKLAND, January 6. In chatting with a Star reporter to-day, ona rowing club official remarked that it was quite a by-word among Auckland oars men that Hadfield an an amateur champion received more assistance' and consideration in expanses entailed in championship! competitions.. than, . any other champion in the province had had. Both the public and. the sportsmen did their part to make it possible for Hadfield to compete at the Olympic games, but, of .course, when it came to a question of the world’s professional championship /the amateur oarsmen of the city could not make any official move. Tho whole position, stated the official, was that rowing as a sport in Auckland was one or the least prominent of many sports, while rowing in Wanganui, both amateur and professional, was one big sport and was backed by enthusiasm and the support ,of both oarsmen and the public. In addition, Wanganui had a course at hand for a world’s championship, and the business folk of Wanganui were keen to find the. champion oarsmen in New Zealand, to bring tho world’s champion race to their - river. THE NEXT CONTEST. WAIKATO RIVER COURSE SUGGESTED. (Per United Press Association.) HAMILTON, January 6. A committee of rowing enthusiasts has been formed jn Hamilton with the object of making inquiry into the possibility of securing tho next race for > tho world’s sculling title for the Waikato River, where a suitable championship Course is available within easy access of both Auckland and Hamilton.
